Message from Boris:

"Please stay indoors, the science says that if you don't stay indoors then lots and lots of people will die, thousands of us, including your relatives. So it's vital you stay indoors. That is, unless you want to go to the park or the shops or school, or you insist on keeping your beauty parlour open, or you're in court, or you just fancy some fresh air. The message from Government is clear, stay indoors unless you want to go out, in which case go out."

It's pathetic.

WTF does this even mean? 😂

Beyond pathetic.

I don't think it was meant to elicit a laugh, Mark, but the image (not the reality of it, obvs) has got me chuckling. :)

Safety is a slightly wider thing than that, though, isn't it? It's not just about side-effects, is it?

It's about whether a particular drug (that is largely safe in other circumstances) has unintended consequences or effects when used in a very different setting or to combat a very different 'enemy'.

That’s a fair point and it has to be a consideration.

This might be a mixture of my naivety, optimism and lack of medical knowledge, but again I’d fall back on fact it’s been in use for over 60 years, is used to treat 3 different conditions already and there were 5m prescriptions for the stuff in the US alone in 2017.

You’d think in all that time and with all those people using if there were any major red flags, they’d have known by now?

I know it’s never been used to treat a specific respiratory illness and this virus is a new one in itself, so who knows - we’ll start to find out soon enough I guess.

When asked by a reporter when the government would consider using the police to enforce social distancing, Boris Johnson seemed quite incredulous.

“Bring in the police!?” he responded.

However, he reiterated that if people continue to ignore advice on staying apart, tougher measures would have be introduced - but still no detail on what these tougher measures could be.

Bit weak from Boris - I think we’ve been too slow in our response to this  , hugely frustrating that we seem to have failed to learn lessons , and even more so that some idiots seem to think it doesn’t apply to them and ignore advice

I take this as the point that the likes of Fauci has been saying.

Yes, the research looks promising and he is hopeful that an existing drug will turn out to be able to treat this effectively but the virus is new and we must look at it in that way.

It’s pretty obvious what he’s saying, yes go outside and get exercise in the fresh air, but don’t socialise and keep at least 2 metres away from others

Except, whilst saying that, he also said that people should go out and enjoy themselves.

The problem is that people don't hear all of a message and often only listen to and take note of the bit that they want to hear.

I thought people would behave more responsibly too, but apparently we have to pass laws restricting our civil liberties to actually make some morons comply with instructions that protect society.

It looks like we will (and this is coming from someone who is exceptionally against that kind of thing) because I can guarantee that there are plenty of people who may have listened to the press conference (or just to snippets afterwards in the media) who will have heard it as saying what they did yesterday and today was fine. And, I also think that people will take the 'shielding' of the vulnerable to suggest that they are even more free to do it as the people who are likely to be severely affected by the virus will be safely locked up inside.

I was just reading about pubs in Scotland that had to be shut down by the police because they refused to close.

Not sure I'd be happy just revoking their licence tbh, I think they should be prosecuted.

Surely if you were in a position to you'd have wrote to these people at the earliest opportunity not when the grim reaper is chasing them around the overcrowded local Tesco.

The Grim Reaper would have to queue up like everyone else

Olympics being postponed by the sounds of it

Don't worry though the Premier League WILL be finished, even if they have to resort to McGinn and Grealish sitting next to each other in hazmat suits playing against Mo Salah and James Milner on FIFA...and Sky will still want to charge you for the pleasure.
