Greatest players never to win an international cap

Was listening to a podcast last night where people had sent in questions, and this was one of them.

The presenters suggested Mikel Arteta, Paolo di Canio, and an author of football-themed detective fiction who shall remain nameless. Aymeric Laporte also came up as a possibility, although surely at age 25 he is just in the same boat as Jack Grealish - be amazed if either of them remain uncapped.

Thought it was an interesting question and there must be some better answers than this?

don't know about greatest  but if we are talking England then Billy Bonds and Jimmy Case could be worth a mention

Regular fantasy football players would probably remember easy points for having Steed Malbranque  in his Fulham days  who i don't think ever got a cap  ? (again subjective on the use of great)

Malbranque actually made a France squad as an unused sub, but was never capped. Good shout, although he was a decent mid-table player really.

If Ailton wasnt Brazilian in that era he would have won many caps

This is a really good one. Had completely forgotten about him.

Gunnar "Säffle" Andersson never played for Sweden even thou he won top scorer in the French league several times for Marseille.

He's still considered one of their best ever players having scored 169 times in 220 games between 1950-1958

He wasn't picked because Sweden had a policy of not picking pro's or players playing abroad

Silvian Distin never got a cap or even called up by France. Felt odd to me when you think how solid he was over the years at various premier league clubs and Boumsong was a regular for them in that era.

Can't even say he was ignored because he didn't play for Man. United or Arsenal as I remember Chimbonda getting a call up to their world cup squad when he played for Wigan.

Can you imagine an English Man U CB not being a cert for every squad? How he never even got 1 cap is baffling

Did not know this before. What a pleasant thing to learn, bet he'll be pissed off about it for his whole life.

He held a grudge against Taylor for it, he brought it up around the time of the Enckelman blunder games

Got to be potato head for England. How he never got a single cap is scandalous! Especially when Keith Curle, John Scales and Earl Barrett all got 3 caps each in the same era!

There were some good defenders during his time... Butcher, Adams, Pallister, Keown, Bould, Des Walker, Mark Wright, but he deserved a chance at least.

Steve Bould only won 2 caps and not until his 30s, Winterburn won 2 as well which is incredible considering that Arsenal defence

That Arsenal defence (plus Cole who came though) was the bedrock that allowed Wenger to build some great teams. Once they'd all gone they were never as strong at the back again.

Did Carlo Cudicini ever get an Italian cap? Number 1 for Chelsea for years and think Italy called him up once for a friendly but not sure he got on.

Seb Rossi and Antonioli were better Italian keepers that went uncapped
