I had a career, then a spinal injury, then a life.

I met my wife in 1993. Every time we've passed a trophy engraving shop since then I've said "That must be a really good. Look at all the trophies they've won." She laughed the first time but never again.

I hit the big 50 next year and can't decide whether to have a party, a watch, a holiday or just let it pass without a fuss.

I wonder whether dyslexics get worried every November when their cocks go black at 2am.

See this is what I was talking about.

Throw that 50th, you need to be celebrated.

My name is Waz.

To quote Denis Leary - “I’m just a regular Joe, with a regular job, I’m your average white, suburbanite slob”

I have four main pleasures in life.

Pot, Shagging, Villa and Pop Culture. (Not in order of preference - that depends entirely on the quality of each offering at any given time)

I’d like a different job and I really should be a bit healthier, but my world is pretty sweet and I feel reasonably lucky in life so far.

When I got married 9 years ago I wore a shirt that was too tight at the collar so had to undue top button. Now I despise all wedding photos as looked scruffy.  My suit wasn’t well fitted either.

It doesn’t even matter and it’s so trivial  but it consumes me and whenever I see a tie I get reminded of it. At times I think maybe the tie is just a symbol for my marriage.

(Maybe this was for a different thread).

Hello my name is Richard.

I work for NHS in Mental Health. I dont enjoy it but it just about pays enough to do some of what I want to do in life and I'm content enough at the mo to not change anything.

I enjoy videogames, retro stuff, hard rock and metal music, sci fi and fantasy films, tv and books.

I procrastinate a lot and watch a lot of YouTube instead of doing productive things on my days off. I love the seaside and have dreams of just buffering off around the world but I dont have the money to do it and am trapped in shift work which makes sorting things out seem like too much hard work.

I am still currently married however been separated for nearly 3 years and will be getting divorced in the new year. My current partner is also in a similar situation and we cant wait to buy a place together next summer.

My dream is to move to Japan. I also really want to start up a YouTube channel but too scared.

I'm quick to react sometimes and dont think things through fully which leads to a lot of situations where I say/type things even though I dont mean them. I also worry that I'm not intelligent enough compared to a lot of people and even though I know what I want to say I'm not able to properly get my thoughts across in a clear manner.

That doesn’t come across in your posts mate.

Anyone have any ideas on what I should do for my 50th next year?

I think you should celebrate it as the rite of passage that it is.

“At 20 a man is a peacock, at 30 a lion, at 40 a camel, at 50 a serpent, at 60 a dog, at 70 an ape, and at 80 nothing”

I take that quote to mean this:

  • In our twenties we are vibrant and on show, though our flair lacks bite.
  • Our thirties we are at our peak powers. Brave and strong, willing to take on life.
  • Forties we start looking like the hunchback of Notre Dame and develop a tendency to spit on the innocent, jokes, we are enduring and resourceful. We take our time.
  • Fifties we are spineless and toxic, clearly where you are at (sorry, I'm not much good with the funnies). No, we have learnt to be sneaky and wise, outwitting even the smartest.
  • Sixties, loyal to and concerned with the protection of the family, but also inclined to do what we please, when we please.
  • Seventies, smarter than you think, clumsy, interested in the world.
  • Eighties, you just about dead my friend, no, what this means is that you are almost there, and are carefree.

So now that we have established another irrelevant commentary from my good self, on to what you should do.

I think you should throw a shindig. 50th, in my mind, is probably the most significant rite of passage there is. But that's me, you should do you.

You are transitioning from virility and youthfulness (young dumb and full of come) to legacy and wisdom (or impotency, viagra and the Mrs telling you to put it away).

Celebrate this transition with those who add meaning to your life, and in a way that reflects something meaningful to you.

Maybe you like down-time and casual occasions, maybe you like a party, maybe you prefer to travel one last time (or maybe for the first), maybe you like a track day with race cars..

I think you should spoil yourself with something that is worthy of the thanks you deserve for coming this far on the journey with us all.

I have been assigned human-like characteristics, to make me appear less mechanistic. For example I like Jim Jarmush films and Tea

And caramel sauce on steak pies :)
