I dont think its that straight forward, you cant argue that it turned out ok, but until grealish came back we were nowhere.

I mean more down to the Carroll last minute signing etc, when we were hoping for more.

Mings was just as important as Grealish in our promotion.

There's been no indication whatsoever that we're even interested in Bowen, as it stands we're unlikey to be even interested in signing a winger, we already have four of them, and with the new system of playing wing-backs, don't even play with out and out wingers anyway. It's a centre-forward that we need.

Agreed for the most part but it's an inside forward we really need, rather than an out and out no.9. Another Grealish basically (no pressure).

May as well close the thread then!

Smith has said we are still looking at bringing a player (or two) in, so we must have some funds.

I don't actually think replacing Jota with Lolley would cost a ridiculous amount and would improve our playing squad.

Anyway by no means would he be my first choice and it's obviously not as easy as just swapping players like that on DD!

There are ways of bringing players in without spending money up front.  This is where we will be operating most probably.

If you think we will be spending any money on transfer fees Id say you will be disappointed!

No we need an out and out centre-forward more than anything, as it stands we only have Davis who's injury prone and Samatta who's new to the country, all it would take is for Samatta to get injured and we'd be in trouble. We have El Ghazi, Trezeguet, Grealish, and Jota who can also play as an outside forward, McGinn could probably play there too, and Vassilev has played there at academy level. I hope not but I worry that that spell where we didn't have any strikers avail and did okay has lulled the club into a false sense of security.

I saw this article last week and I think that it puts fees nowadays in to perspective. At the end of the 96/97 season Ronaldo went to Inter for 25.2 million GBP - today's money 145 million GBP. That's more than a five fold increase in 23 years.

Considering this Wesley would have cost 3.8 million pounds back then, Trezegeut 1.9 million and so on. Our alleged 120 million spending spree this season would have been just shy of 21 million in 1997.

We bought Collymore in the same summer for 7 million. Nowadays he would cost 40 million.

The 25 most expensive transfers in football history adjusted for inflation

Transfer fees in football seem to be spiralling out of control.

It was back in 1979 that Trevor Francis became the first British footballer to command a £1 million transfer.

It soon escalating and 10 years later, it was the norm for big clubs to splash £10 million on a player.

Considering this I don't really feel we have spent a whole lot on the squad and we've gotten reasonable value for money.

I don't think I understand how they're calculating inflation.

Bowen, lollely, berahino, benhrama. We have to get out of the mindset of looking at championship players to push us on. Its like night and day, the step up. If we are to get back to were we should be, we suit be recruiting from the top leagues. Not taking 20-25 mill punts.

Gayle is a perfect example, I thought West Brom would beat us last season in play offs, solely because of him. He couldn’t cut it in the premiership.

Bowen at west ham for a medical. 22m the final fee with add ons. That's not good for our relegation scrap.

Pity for the player, for his dad and for us, in my opinion. Was it the lure of London or just that he had no other choice? I don't think they are more likely than we are of staying up, I thought he might have gone to Palace, if we didn't move for him. The porn pensioners have just paid Hull's asking price and given the player all of the money he wants, because they are desperate. Oh well, we move to another target, I hope...

Not just gambling on no more injuries. But gambling on no loss of form.

If Samatta struggled and Davis picks up a knock are we then back to El Ghazi up top?

The squad is worse than at the end of the summer. To me that's terrible.

Have to say, if true, I would be hugely disappointed as essentially we’ve just covered injuries to Wes, Heaton and McGinn, and arguably with slightly poorer quality.  We needed another striker before injuries and that hasn’t changed.

I would argue it would be a poor window given relegation is at stake.  Hopefully come 11pm in 12 hours time we have another signing in.
