We didn't buy either did we?

I think we have the actual cash yes. But we can't spend it due to FFP I believe.

If we could, I don't know why we didn't sign the two players you've mentioned in the Summer. Or sign Bowen and a striker January 1st.

Didn't it just come out yesterday that by selling Kodjia we've actually made a 1 mill profit with regards to FFP?

Smith quoted as saying we're looking at players from across the world because of January being a 'tough market', maybe we'll see someone from join from South America... or North America, or maybe Austrailia, maybe some decent players in China that want to return to Europe...

If it's true, that would takes us to something around £139m spent then. We can't just keep spending can we?

I don't care if Purslow says it works, go for it. Go get Benrahma for £25m and Youssouf Fofana/Teun Koopmeiners for £20m, we'll stay up no probs.

No, the 140m would be amortised over the contracts so if 5 years for simplicity of this example would mean 28m per year

I don't believe we gave out any contract shorter than 4 years apart from Heaton, so if that's the rules happy days. Surely FFP can't be sidestepped that easily?

If that is the case why we didn't buy another striker in the Summer?

What reason could we possibly have for going to the season with an untested Wes, an untested Davis, and an unfit Kodjia who Smith never seemed to fancy as a player?

I'll go out on a limb here and say he probably knows him from youth football in the Smoke.

No idea, many times deals fall away at the last minute.  At the end of the transfer window all the talk was another striker was coming in with a number on here having ITK names.  For some reason it didn’t happen but I don’t think that was due to lack of finances or cash but I could be wrong but seems strange that we’d go after a player(s) when we had no more finance wouldn’t it!

Could be anything from the player wanting too much, the player getting a better offer or cold feet, agent fees were too much, the selling club didn’t get their replacement so refused to sanction the deal....there are maybe other possible reasons.  We look like we just run out of time to turn attention elsewhere which is understandable if they thought they were close but maybe bad planning....who knows!  All we know is it left us short and then we’ve been unlucky with injuries.....sucks!

As we’ve discussed on here before I believe transfer values are generally amortised over the life of a contract so we would have to spend an absurd amount to risk FFP. It would be putting us in a position where we couldn’t spend for years though.

Basically on day one you spend £30m to buy a £30m asset so your books balance. The asset then depreciates over the life of the contract.

Interestingly I think one of the charges the EFL have brought against Derby is how they amortise values, though they previously signed this off. Apparently they have for quite some time left a residual value of (say) 40% at the end of the contract. This means their annual writedowns are lower but if they let a players’ contract run out they have a whacking great loss. It also means other clubs will have a book value of zero on a player who renews at the end of their original contract so any sale after an extension of time would be pure profit however Derby will always have a downwards adjustment on sales whenever made.

I dunno as Hause joined an academy at 8 and I’m not sure they would have let him play many, if any, games externally due to insurance. Eze didn’t join the Millwall academy until 11 years later and Hause had already joined the Birmingham academy 3 years before.

Young footballers do seem to socialise a lot more with players of other clubs nowadays though.

I still agree that I don’t think it means anything.

Lucas Biglia is being shopped around atm. Would be a great, experienced midfielder to bring in on the cheap imo. Far more ability than any of our current (fit) CMs.

Not sure he could be counted on full-time, but he'd certainly provide some cover for what should be a low price.

Would depend on his fitness. Only played 7 games this season. Last thing we need is another midfield getting up to speed. Even at 33 he is a very good player though.

Would be up for that. Would be like when Leicester signed Cambiasso in terms of impact IMO

Hannes Wolf available on loan from Leipzig. Could play that RW/10 role well.

20 year old Austrian keen to impress heading into the Euros. If we can put an agreed fee in, could be a good deal.
