Good bounce back from Scotland. Pool A is very interesting. Surely Japan are smarting over 4 years ago when Scotland bust their bubble after their heroics against the Boks. The script is almost identical.

Got to feel sorry for Samoa though, not today particularly but all the time. All their best players play for other countries

Same for most of the South Sea Islands. It really is disgusting how many of their best young players are poached to go play in other countries to qualify for that nation.

For every Tuilagi, there are hundreds of others brought over and then cast aside if they don’t quite make the grade. Young lives ruined and home nations negatively impacted.

Brutal start to the Argentina game but red card, whilst the right decision will spoil this as a contest now.

Yep agreed, Argentina were doing well and really pushing England. However playing over an hr with 14 men will kill them, England will pull away with it 20 mins to go.

Letter of the law the sending off had to happen even though at real speed it’s hard and Farrell didn’t seem affected by it.

Top referee though and the mic with him explaining his decision has always been great, still don’t know why football won’t follow suit.

Glad to see they're consistent - dirty on the football and rugby field!

Lovely try.

England clearly trying to keep the ball on the pitch to wear down Argentina for later

Understandably, Argentina looked shattered at the end of the first half.

England did the right thing by continuing phase upon phase we’ll past half time to prolong the pain.

England should score 2-3 tries in the second half.

Let’s hope Billy isn’t bad we’ll need him in the knock out stages

With a man over, it was a good thing to take him off and give minutes on the pitch to another squad member.

sure he’s fine

Great to see Jack Nowell back.

He brings something different to our backs. Brilliantly taken try, from pinballing off tacklers to the precision dab down in the corner.

Yep to finish like that is great skill

Very impressive from England. They are very powerful. Ball presentation at ruck is fast and they move it quickly. Their running lines are a little bit predictable and telegraphed at times but cant pick out much criticism in their game right now. Argentina ? Poorest they've been probably since 2007. My worry for England is they will arrive at a QF a bit undercooked. France will be predictably French in their approach to a QF and i don't think they'll be too fussed if they finish first or 2nd in the pool. They have a probably misplaced yet dangerous mindset that they can beat anyone and they might roll over next weekend knowing that they are basically into the QF also ( providing they beat Tonga) England could do with France turning up next week though. They need a test. Wales or Australia will be a much tougher game than they've got in a while.

Scotland are in a tricky spot. They need the BP win against Russia obviously but the Japan game is what like a 4 day turnaround and they clearly need to be in optimum levels of fitness and conditioning to beat these guys. Do they have the squad depth to make wholesale changes against Russia and still hammer them ?

This Rugby World Cup has proved the international Cricket Board correct, and that really annoys me as I want to see more nations given a chance at the CWC.

But at the Cricket World Cup this year there was no massively weak team, and every game was closely fought.

This whole first round of matches in this Rugby World Cup just seem pointless; New Zealand vs Canada and Namibia.. ffs.

And now Scotland need a bonus point win vs Russia to have any chance when they come to play Japan, making qualification potentially come down to who can beat the whipping boys by the most. That's not World Cup standard of sport.

Yes it tests squad depth over a longer tournament but this is meant to be the best players in the world up against each other, and every game should be a high level contest.

Pointless watching 90% of these first round games.

That’s exactly what I used to like about the football World Cup, back in the day.

The teams like Zambia where they perhaps didn’t have a 100% understanding of the rules, and would likely get tanked. But they’d have some stand out incredible player that you otherwise wouldn’t have heard of. You would then be that guy, down the park later, with the fancy trick moves.

Personally, in football terms, it’s not Germany vs Italy that I’m tuning in for. It’s Chile vs Iran.

When have mismatches (especially involving the Kiwis against minnows) not been the case in rugby world cups?

2019 NZ 71 Namibia 9

2019 NZ 63 Canada 0

---------------------------------

1987 NZ 70 Italy 6

1995 NZ 145 Japan 17

1999 NZ 101 Italy 3

2003 NZ 91 Tonga 7

2003 NZ 70 Italy 7

2003 NZ 68 Canada 6

2007 NZ 108 Portugal 13

2007 NZ 85 Romania 8

2011 NZ 83 Japan 7

2011 NZ 79 Canada 15

2015 NZ 58 Namibia 14

Edit: Looking at it, 1991 was the one with the fewest hugely one-sided first round games but still it had Scotland beating Japan 47-9 and Zimbabwe 51-12 and Japan beating Zimbabwe 52-8.
