Thought Elmo was good against Spurs but poor today. Thought however Taylor was very good against Spurs and brilliant today. And I don't rate Taylor one bit but credit when credit's due.

I'm coming round to the 4-2-3-1 with Jota, McGinn and Grealish in front of two holding midfielders and two fullbacks providing the wing play - it's almost a 2-2-5-1 when you have the ball. I think that's what AWOL was getting at. I'm also not against us trying a similar thing with a 5-1-3-1 with an extra CB instead of a second holding midfielder. 

I'm not overly keen on pushing Grealish forward into a support striker role - I think he needs to be able to keep coming deep to get the ball, he thrives on involvement. For me, he'd need to be the Cowans in that formation - the only player I think we have that can sort of do the Shaw role in that regard would be O'Hare - and I don't want that.

I think we're struggling with the same problem - we have one effective flank and one ineffective flank - plan A would be for El Ghazi to start playing a whole lot better.

It ultimately all comes back to that......Individual players doing their job for the good of the team......I'll crack this coaching lark if it kills me.

I must confess for my sins....I am more inclined to favour 10 outfield players winning their individual battles against their opposite numbers and linking it all in to a cohesive team effort.....Isn't that Man City?

I'm genuinely flabbergasted that anybody would think persisting with this will work out.  If we play Elmo and Taylor against Everton then we will be the same narrow , one dimensional team we have seen the last 2 games Jack will get swamped and Wes will be boxed out again. 

Nip it in the bud now and become the attacking team Smith wants to be or stay with the "safety first coward" option and say hello to 46 games again.

Elmo might be steady (I have never saw anything above that from him) but steady is not going to work unless we alter the formation that we spent all summer working on (successfully with Guilbert and Targett) 

Elmo and Taylor are the last lingering shadows of Steve Bruce IMO and unless we go back to how we set up in the summer then I can't see many points being won or Wesley getting enough chances created for him.  

If we are picking players based on "doing a job very well" then Guilbert should have never lost HIS place based on better performances in the Summer, albeit against lesser opponents bar Leipzig.

Elmo is a defensive liability, he's been excellent going forwards - he's playing as a support winger. I haven't seen him not make himself available on the overlap once today. It was the dominant feature of his play. It's been a mile away from safety first. I can see that on the other side, but on the right, Elmo is currently playing in as attacking a role as I've seen from a Villa full back in a while - he's providing as much of our width in attacking areas as anyone on the field.

I think there's something in that Guilbert should have been given the opportunity to continue in the role after his excellent pre-season - I think Elmohamady got the nod because of how well he gets on with Trezeguet and how well they link - he also wasn't available for a chunk of pre-season because of the ACON which might have had an influence - but I, like you was very disappointed not to see Guilbert on the team sheet against Spurs. I\ve not been disappointed since - Elmohamady has had two very good games, particularly in his attacking play.

Cut out the individual mistakes, have a bit more luck with deflections and referees and get a bit more clinical with our shooting. We're not far away - xG had us ahead for today and over the course of a season we'll get points out of games like this.

I'm a Villa fan so my knowledge of Brum is non existent , but I can name  landmarks in Lichfield or Worcester correctly almost  62% of the time.

OK. Having watched the match back on the extended match choice highlights on Sky, this result was a travesty.

We absolutely murdered them, a more one sided match it would be hard to see. 

We absolutely gifted them 2 goals and they virtually had nothing else.  We could and should have scored 5 or 6 and on another day we would have. 

We were the better team by a country mile.

I agree, 

Factor in that 5 players were making their home debut against a team that bar a couple have played together for the past few seasons .

 

I saw enough today to believe we will be fine this season

Absolutely. We are all ticked off but I think we can see there is a decent  team just waiting for things to click .

Unfortunately we will have a week of Adrian Durham types who only saw that we lost at home shouting Villa are definitely doing a Fulham.

I'll stick to Radio X until about Wednesday .

Quite like this post. I agree and think most people who watched the match could see that it was there for the taking. A few bad bounces and refereeing decisions that didn’t go our way played a part in handing us a loss. It wasn’t our day, and that’s football.

Only worry about what we can control. Eliminating the mental lapses and finishing our chances would have flipped the result today. Those need to be addressed for future fixtures.

If anything, today showed that on our day we can and should be competitive in the Prem.  However, we can only tout moral victories and good performances for so long, and at some point those need to start translating into positive results. I’m confident they will.

To summarize:

- A (surprisingly) very nervy opening 15 minutes

- An impatient last 15 minutes (you simply can't rush forward on every touch - it just turns over possession)

Overall, a positive outing from a team that has yet to hit it's straps, despite the disappointing result.

The MOTD highlights and commentary were astonishing.  You would think we were lucky to avoid a thumping instead of the other way round.  Never seen such blatantly biased reporting even at the height of the Man Ure media wankfest.

To top it off their closing credits goals compilation shows the Wilson goal which took a big deflection but not the far superior Luiz strike which was clean as a spoon in a circus.

They should've had a penalty in second half, seems VAR is pretty random in decisions they decide to check given Wesley clash with keeper was reviewed.
