The protests were largely against the rising move to market capitalism by the Chinese government and the move from one undemocratic system to another - it was primarily a socialist protest. Hong Kong would have hated it.
Xela
Quote One of the last public memorials in Hong Kong to those killed in the Tiananmen protests has been covered up. The calligraphy - painted on the pavement of a bridge - paid tribute to the pro-democracy protesters killed by Chinese authorities in Beijing in 1989. It was covered with metal on Saturday by the University of Hong Kong, which called the work routine maintenance. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-china-60180507
Xela
Quote Several people have been arrested in Hong Kong, reports say, as authorities seek to restrict public commemoration of the Tiananmen Square massacre. Saturday is the 33rd anniversary of the highly sensitive incident in which China's rulers crushed peaceful protests with tanks and troops. Until recently, Hong Kong was one of the few Chinese territories which commemorated the event. But Beijing has effectively banned the city's annual public vigil. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-china-61690523
