MN has watching McGinn with some of his back to other players action. Marshalled the midfield well and managed to bring the ball out of tight areas well. I thought he worked well with Drinkwater and Luiz when he came on tbh

Both Drinkwater and Luiz were playing deeper than him in a ‘quarterback’ role. Nakamba was winning the ball with his back to goal and laying it back to the quarterback to rake a long pass away to the wide players. Was working well all match.

I think Drinkwater brought the best out in him but nobody will acknowledge that on here.

I agree, Drinkwater calms the situation and is more disciplined in his positional sense he doesn't get dragged all over the pitch.

Good point. If the wide players improve their crossing, we’d have scored a few more tonight. That Samatta is decent in the air so hopefully if this is a tactic moving forward, we have a player who gets on the end of the crosses. El Ghazi just looks out of place up there on his own.

They ALL seemed MUCH better on the ball tonight, a weak point as we all know, and something Smith has been banging on about.

Is the message and training finally getting through?

happy for him tonight, even when he lost possession he was right back in there to get it back!

Passing was much better, all round good performance.

He presses like that and drives the ball forward like he did towards the end of the first half for the rest of the season. We stay up.

It was effective as ****. When he slowed down or held off, it showed . He's clearly capable of it, if he's fit enough and keen enough to do that for the second half of the season then we're on to something.

Not saying him singlehandedly will keep us up, but it broke up play and got the rest of our team in their faces a bit, it will open channels for the more gifted footballers like Jack, John and Luiz to do their thing. If he can't do it for the next 16 games then we need to sign a second player who can make up the difference when he tires. So important.

In reality that's his job in the team. Tackle, intercept and give it simple. It works. The majority of our good performances have come with him in the side. That's not a coincidence imo.

MOTM for me
