If fit he must start every game. He is the only player who offers any presence in midfield. He is far from perfect but he is the best option available. Dean needs to stop the effing chopping and changing and stick to something.

How did he do?

Played OK, kept his passes simple and covered plenty of ground and never hid. The system gave him and Douglas more freedom and less of the pitch to cover, Taylor and Frédéric pushed into midfield covering the left and right side.

Got through loads of work.

Terrifying having him in possession. Never looks like he's got hold of the ball.

Caught out a few times today trying to do the right thing and look for a pass. Just speed up a bit please Marvelous. Long over full backs into space isn't the worst ball you'll ever play if you're stuck.

As some of the Bruges fans hinted, he seems to be more of a Kante-style marauding ballwinner than a Makelele-style holding midfielder. He's a hard tackler with bags of energy, but he lacks a bit of quality and composure in possession. The higher he plays, the less of a problem that is.

The 3-4-3 system allowed him to play quite high, and I think he looked more confident, even getting involved in some nice one touch stuff around the box.

I could see him having a good second half of the season, as the team gels. Clearly he isn't ever going to be a playmaker, but he wins possession in dangerous areas. There's a nice balance to his partnership with Luiz.
