Looking at transfermarkt which is usually reliable,he has played in nearly 140 games and had played dm 3 times. He played rb and cb more.

It looks like we are getting Luiz in to play that role. We’ll then have other midfielders as back up.

CM? Looks like he played there a lot season at Charlton. In a double pivot that can be practically DM

I think a few people are missing the point here. Konsa is clearly a CB, and that's where he should play.

But we lack strength in depth at DM, even with the Douglas Luiz signing. My pecking order would be:

  • Douglas
  • Hourihane
  • Konsa / Thor

If we play 4-2-3-1 against a top side, injuries may bring Konsa into the mix for DM.

I also completely agree with those who say that just because a CB can pass a ball, that it's lazy to say they can play at DM. I think Konsa is a different proposition from Axel or Mings, because he has actually played there before!

Edit: He regularly featured as a midfielder for Charlton in 2017 - check their lineups. It's way more than just 3 fixtures. This is a position he actually has a experience of playing...

Bruce's problem (sorry, one of the problems) was he was playing people out of position even when he had specialist options in those positions, and even when the player clearly didn't know how to play that position.

I'm talking about the much more realistic possibility that injuries force DS into making a call like this. It's not as if he hasn't had to do this already (Hause at left back, Kodjia out wide, etc.) What's wrong with discussing that?

Been dreadful against Charlton. He looks like a squad option in need of development, definitely not a starter. I'd have Engels, Chester and Hause ahead of him at the moment, probably in that order.

I think that’s a bit harsh, Konsa is a new player and is just settling in. Smith has said in press conferences that he could play for England, he rates him that highly, based on what I’ve seen of him, I agree

Not saying he's a dud signing - but he's miles off an England player right now. I'm sure he'll come good, but no way would I throw him in yet as a starter - could ruin him.

I think he's looked very good over pre-season, not much better or worse than any of our other central defenders other than Mings who's looked better than everyone as you'd perhaps expect. I think Engels will probably start the season ahead of him though, just because he has more experience at a higher level.

lets not get on his back, i have thought he looked pretty decent in pre season overall, yeah he misplaced a pass and made a silly error today, but i think its clear he's talented.

If we have Mings/Engels as the first choices, then Konsa and Hause as the backups, im sure a season within the setup and learning from DS/Terry will do him the world of good.

I think he will be a good player for us in time.

Didn't watch the whole game, but first half performance looked fine to me. Very composed on the ball. Apart from Mings, who looks a level above, it's hard to pick a pecking order for the 2nd slot, since they all bring something different.

Or be the making of him

That's a really good point about them all bringing something different.  Konsa is great option when we are going to have a large portion of the possession.  You can then switch him out with a larger/more physical CB like Engels or Hause for a Steve Bruce long ball side.  Really good options to have.

Engels is also excellent on the ball fyi.

He's a good prospect and will be a decent investment for Villa. The way prices have sky rocketed this summer means we bought him just in time.

Agree with this - just don't think he's ready to be a regular prem starter yet.

He had a 12m release clause, so wouldnt have mattered if we bought him this summer or next. Without that though Brentford would have been asking for 20m+ no doubt
