RasenBallsport Leipzig (Aug 3)

If nothing else, Hourihane showing how vital a set piece specialist can be if a side are possibly going to get limited chances elsewhere. Extremely difficult to leave that out of the side, and yes I know the arguments.

I only saw the second half but we looked excellent against a very good Leipzig side. Engels impressed me greatly, so did Heaton, we looked very strong to me, a Premier League outfit. I can’t wait for the start of the season now, even more so after seeing that

A win is a win but it's clear there is some tightening up to do. We need to press more when they are passing down the wings as they were one touching it and getting it through our lads.

Can't complain though as others have said, we won a cl team 3-1.

Heaton looked great, excellent saves.

Wes was ineffective, hopefully that changes.

Trezeguet I would clearly play over Ghazi.

And why the hell did Ghazi get a yellow card, that puzzled me because he were brought down.

That was a thoroughly useful pre season game. We played well against good opposition, Leipzig took the game seriously. Indeed both teams did, it was a bit if an ill tempered affair from the off.

Early signs of a battling mentality, which could hold us in good stead. We looked vulnerable at times, but Mings was really good during those periods.

Hourihane was decent in all areas but showed why he is such an important player to have on the pitch. His set pieces are magnificent.

McGinn looked a little bit off the pace, he was harried and pressed and be didn't look used to having such little time on the ball. He'll get better though.

Full backs were not entirely convincing, but not bad. Wesley was reasonably quiet.

Jota is my new favourite player, he didn't do anything stand out today, but I like the look of him.

Overall we can be quite pleased with that.

Yup, Think we'll score a lot from set-pieces this season too ; Mings owes Conor two assists as well.

Quite liked the one where Conor chipped it to mcginn at the far post too.

Only saw the second half. Some things stood out:

  • Guilbert and Targett get forward a lot. I like this but fear the counter. Would like a defensive mid to drop deep when they surge forward.
  • Our wide players already look to be linking well (Anwar + Targett, Jota + Guilbert)
  • Mings getting involved to defend Grealish after the clear foul just outside the box. I like it: We won't take garbage from other teams
  • Hourihane's left foot is a threat from any set piece.
  • How good is Heaton!
  • We are still learning how to play together with our new signings. It's only going to get better from here!

Massive ahead of next week for confidence more than anything. They had a lot of their big guns out. Werner, Sabitzer, Poulsen. High quality opposition. Will stand to us. We were outplayed for large parts..Might just temper expectations a tad, which is no bad thing. We are stepping up in levels big time. You'd tend ( myself included ) to get carried away with the signings at times but it will be difficult for us too.

At one point in that game I could see us losing by a few. They were all over us. But if that happened I’d be saying the same thing I am now.

It’s just a friendly.

that was a very competitive friendly though. no quarter given !

A bit naughty for a friendly at times. I thought we only really looked in trouble off the back of our own mistakes; the occasional bad pass, something a bit too casual or too flashy - we need to take that out of our game. Other than that we looked quite bright if a little toothless. Heaton looks very good and we look okay - we'll improve as we get used to each other. A good test and a decent one to have before the trouble starts.

????

We beat a top notch German side away from home - and you think that will temper expectations ?
