John Posted March 29, 2020 Share Posted March 29, 2020 In the Sunday Times today, this is one of the options, that the PL is reported to be considering: "Should completion not be possible an alternative is a “curtailed” season, raising the possibility that the Premier League could credibly conclude if it were able to play only two more games: Aston Villa v Sheffield United and Manchester City v Arsenal, the two fixtures postponed because of the Carabao Cup final. Playing those would leave every team having completed the same number of matches (29), allowing the league to stop with finishing positions at the time of curtailment. Liverpool would be champions, Norwich City and Bournemouth would be relegated and Aston Villa v Sheffield United would become a match of enormous significance, with Villa able to survive — at Watford’s expense — with a victory and United, if they won, finishing fifth and qualifying for the Champions League should the Court of Arbitration for Sport uphold Manchester City’s Uefa ban." Obviously it's a terrible idea and flies in the face of upholding integrity even more than playing all remaining fixtures behind closed doors in a short space of time, but just to play devil's advocate, a one-off "home" game (which it wouldn't really be, but still) versus Sheffield United to avoid relegation might a fairly good deal for us given our current position. Have a break for transfers etc and then complete the next season before the Euros. I don't see this season being able to restart much before sometime in September. Which competition is going to be cancelled next season to allow any chance of the games being played. Caraboa Cup, FA. Cup, Europa and Champions League? There will be a lot of sponsors arguing that their competition should be played because they have paid for the exposure. Any suggestions will have to be agreeable to a lot of people, not least the government and British public and I will be surprised if in 6 months time anyone really cares about this season. Possibly make and state clear rules about how next season will be decided if not all games can be completed, if teams can agree on them in advance. Also it seems the true death figure is much higher than what they are stating. Imagine if there is a second strain of this virus next season and a club has spent way over the means trying to get promotion or top 4 etc (very possible) but gamble on receiving TV money etc to keep them going.. football stops again - next season declared void, big debt left on club.
