I can't think of a game last season where Wolves didn't play 343. Doherty was hugely popular in FPL as a defender playing RW in the 4

3-4-3 is a good shout as it means any wingers can play in the front 3. In a 3-5-2 we limit Trezeguet and El-Ghazi.

I think they've played with 3/5 at the back pretty much exclusively for the last 2 years.

Though they played a lot more 3-5-2 in the PL, with Jiminez/Jota up top, rather than the 3-4-3.

Luyindama has only played as DM six times in his whole career, Konsa has played more times as DM. And there's no way that we'll will have just signed three wingers, only to then go and play three at the back with wing-backs, nor will we want to change our system, going into a new season, players have enough adapting to do as it is.

Agreed.  But it's about squad depth and options.  If Luyindama plays predominantly as a CB but also can be a DM, then he can be cover for positions or bring us the ability to play a new formation.

Being entirely rigid in approach is not necessarily a good thing.

Really pleased with all the transfer activity but it’s just seems a bit crazy that we still need more signings to have a proper and capable PL squad. If we strengthen sufficiently, we will have good options in all positions.

I think we may pull off a late or surprise signing on/around deadline day too, such as Benrahma and/or Butland.

Imo, we at least need:

A confident, commanding GK

A starting DM (hopefully Luiz) and backup/rotation DM

A striker or goal-scoring forward who can rotate or even play with Wesley

We’d be in a great position if we get those kinds of players in and I would be confident of us having a really good season and surprising many people (esp those who continue to say we’ve “done a Fulham”, forgetting that we’ve retained much of the core that got us promoted). I believe in Deano, best manager we’ve had in ages.

Potential outs -

Kalinic

Chester? I’d be happy to see him stay but we’ve signed a lot of defenders, esp if we get Luyindama in too.

Hogan if possible and maybe even Kodjia if we manage to get a superior striker in.

I’d like to see Taylor leave but we don’t have a backup LB, not even a youngster, so he’ll have to be retained and hopefully continues to improve.

Would like to see the following leave on loan and get some development & game time -

Bree

Revan

Green (clearly not good enough)

O’Hare

Doyle Hayes

Ramsey?

RHM

Davis (could retain as backup)

Now that i think about it that's more correct. Jimenez and Jota as a front 2

But we already have two central defenders who can play as a DM, and actual midfielders who can play there as well, we also already have five defenders, so it's not as if we're light in that position either. We can play any formation we want without signing Luyindama, I very much doubt that it's going to happen.

I don't actually think we'd get rid of Smith whatever happens.

I'm not sure - I would believe Smith would brings us straight back but owners get desperate so they might sack him of we were rock bottom and losing games every week.

I'd be surprised if we were in that position to be honest.

Yes Engels and Konsa. Not that having Defenders who can play at DM is particurly essential, I doubt very much we'll be using either Engels or Konsa in midfield, as I think we'll sign another two midfielders, and even if we don't the midfielders we already have will be played as DM before any of our defenders.

Id be fairly surprised to see another DM come in on top of Luiz (who im confident will be announced soon). I can see one of the new CB's being expected to fill in for that position if Luiz ever got injured. Would be great to get a specific backup/rotation but there is just so much to do this window and you can't have it all. Priorities are GK and ST. Anything after that is bonus and arguably overkill this window.

We might play three at the back with wingers - England did it at the WC last year. Was a pretty exciting formation.

You could argue all 4 of tbe CBs weve bought this summer are decent on the ball and could play DM. A specialist or 2 would be better though. We're not done yet. Still 2 or 3 after Luiz I reckon.

Its crazy. This is the summer of madness. We needed it, still... mind boggling.

In a Smith team a ball playing DM is one of the most essential components to his system, so I doubt we're just going to rely on Luiz and if he gets injured just stick a defender there. It will either be Luiz and Hourihane covering that position, or Luiz and another new signing and when I say 'another new signing' I mean an actual midfielder who can play as a DM, someone like Marvelous, Phillips, or maybe Ryan Woods.

The difficulty will be finding another DM who is willing to sit on the bench. That’s why I think Villa should hold onto Bjarnson as a squad filler.

Why is Allardyce and everyone else always have to mention Fulham?

To outsiders who take just a cursory glance at our transfer dealings, they just see that both clubs came up after winning the play-off final and bought a lot of new players having won promotion.

It's lazy of pundits to rush to the conclusion that we will follow them back into the Championship as a result.
