Tom Carroll

I always thought he sat deep and was a decent passer, which is exactly what we need for the style Smith likes.  I fully expect him to get pelters for passing sideways or whatever but he should help us tick over, plus must surely be more mobile than Whelan and co.

My concern is that Smith doesn't seem to want to play with a dedicated DM. Which has it's advantages going forward of course, but I think it's one of the reasons our defence has looked poor in recent weeks.

But like I said above, I can't claim to know much about Carroll at all so I'm more than happy to see how he gets on before judging him

Obviously Smith prefers playing on the front foot so would prioritise ability on the ball, but if Carroll is disciplined and mobile enough he can do a decent job as DM.  It's possible that Mings could play centre half with Chester and Axel could move to DM.

He gives us another options in the middle of the park which we need at the moment given that Whelan and Jedinak are out of favour under Smith, and Connor and BB never looked comfortable at the base of the midfield. I am hoping that Carroll is a player that is comfortable on the ball and can pick out a forward pass or carry the ball if no pass is available - these very basic traits would improve us to no end but none of our current crop seem capable.

I remember him at spurs wasn't great there. Seen him a few times at Swansea looked a bit meh.

Looking at his stats doesn't score many at all either. Seems like a passing player. Isn't a dm. Either.

You mean a passing player like the ones that ds likes to use in that position to get the best out of his tactics?

...but we know best!

I'd argue that the reason the defence has looked poor is not the system, rather injuries and players used with the wrong skillsets.

The system makes sense, you don't need a bruiser there, rather to simply keep the ball better.

A dedicated passer here relieves the pressure on the defence by keeping the opponents on the back foot.

If Carol is this player I have no idea but tbh I don't think fer was. Maybe we have our first choice here?

There were other options yesterday I might have preFERred, but I’m happy to have a mobile midfielder onboard who is comfortable on the ball and a good passer.

No complaints from me.

If he's brave and shows for the ball he'll succeed for us in that DM role offensively. Don't think he'll do much to stop runners marauding through our midfield though.

Fee being linked so heavily will hurt him if he doesn't start well.

You need a tackler obviously in that role and he certainly isn't one of them. I think like stevo says above I don't think Smith likes to play with a dm

Some people might say we will stay here with signings like these.

That's not me having a go at Carroll, just not sure we needed him, seems more of the same of what we already have and with everyone fit can't see him starting.

I just can't believe we haven't signed a specialist left back. I'd rather not have done the Hause or Carroll deals to get one proper left back.

Maybe but january is a terrible window for value and before we would have spunked money away on costly quick fix options like Hogan and Lansbury

I think this new regime are here for the long run and patience us needed

We have 2 tacklers in Whelan and Jedi and Smith has played neither in that role since he got here. Not his style

Can’t claim to have been following Carroll’s career at all so I don’t know have any view on he will do here.

I do just wonder what’s gone wrong at Swansea that they can dispense with his services? It’s not like their squad is brimful of winning footballers at the moment. Maybe it’s a money thing?

Anyway, good to see someone coming in to play in an area that has clearly been a bit of a problem in recent weeks. Good luck to him I say.

I had no idea about Fer and have no idea about Carroll. Anyone know who Carroll will naturally replace?

Whelan in the current line ups or Hourihane the way we set up with Jack in the team.

A little concerning that he hasn't played since October and despite being back in training since early January hasn't even made the Swansea bench this year.

The lack of games though can work both ways I suppose. If he is now fit then he should have plenty left in the tank for the run in. Likewise Mings.

I don't know how quickly he'll come into the team. If he was to come in tomorrow I'd expect to see him start along side Hourihane in a deeper role and McGinn pushed forward. With Grealish back and him and McGinn certain to start then it is a toss up between Carroll and Hourihane for the remaining centre midfield spot.

With Grealish and Lansbury out we have struggled for options in the middle and been left with players in Whelan and Bjarnason who put themselves about and try but lack quality when on the ball. I'd imagine Carroll is much more a Smith kind of player than either of those two and Jedinak.
