I remember him at spurs wasn't great there. Seen him a few times at Swansea looked a bit meh.

Looking at his stats doesn't score many at all either. Seems like a passing player. Isn't a dm. Either.

Well if he passes the ball well that fits in with what Smith wants from his players. Sounds like an improvement on what we have and considerably younger, so should have more energy and time to develop further.

If I remember correctly he is a very good passer of the ball. If he can stay fit he should be an instant upgrade on the shite we got.

Yes. He is of the Westwood type and I have to admit when I've seen him play he has not been overly impressive. People really disliked Westwood so I don't think he will be popular here in that sense.

From my own point of view I am not too inspired by the signing however of course I will give a clean slate here and get pnehind him like any player that signs for us.

Welcome tom

He has played 94 matches in the premier league, which is, I guess, 94 more times than Conor Hourihane! For that alone he deserves a bit of credit. He also deserves a chance.

The Villa team have signed him whilst they decided to avoid Fer. Maybe we should be grateful that we do not have another overpaid liability in our squad.

He looked quality when at Spurs and he cost £4.5m when he joined Swansea two years ago. I would have gone for him when he left Spurs and I'm happy we have him on board now. He has a bit of style and class about his game. Welcome to the club Tom!

I think a lot of negatively comes froum we expected fer. If there was no fer links and it was just Carroll I think it may have gone down better.

If it was. Failed medical then the club did well to get someone on short notice.

While as underwhelmed as the rest, it's one of those

The whole is worth more than sum of the parts

Scenarios

You could put on paper our best team out and they may not work as well as a mix of our best players and a few average ones.

Let's see what happens, neither happy nor unhappy really.

I actually said the other day that Westwood would now fit into our team very well, so in the whole I am pleased with this signing if he is in that mould.

Composed on the ball with a good passing range, I just hope he has some energy and can get the midfield moving. Our current problem is that the midfield goes missing too often, I hope he can help this.

I think people need to remember we are a mid table 2nd tier team at moment

Some people might say we will stay here with signings like these.

That's not me having a go at Carroll, just not sure we needed him, seems more of the same of what we already have and with everyone fit can't see him starting.

I just can't believe we haven't signed a specialist left back. I'd rather not have done the Hause or Carroll deals to get one proper left back.

I see this signing being in the mould of what Woods did for Smith at Brentford.

I think it's astute. A player to sit deep and control the tempo of play. If it means Bjarnason is sent to the glue factory then I am all for it.

I think he very clearly is the Woods option for Smith, whether he can do the role as well or better I have no idea.

Hopefully he’ll turn out great but this morning I do feel a bit deflated as I feel the added physicality of Hayden/Fer would have been much much more use to us.

Tim Sherwood wanted Tom Carroll way back then---but the "money ball" board woud,nt sanction an offer---hes finally arrived, i wonder if Timbo had got his way how things might have worked out?

Sherwood is the worst manager we've ever had.

Don't believe his bollocks.

Can't say I've seen much of Carroll for a while so I'll reserve judgement on this.

It's an area we needed to strengthen so that's a positive, but I can't say I feel anything other than curiosity at this stage.

The issue I have with this is does that mean conor will play dm? If you put him Carroll and grealish when he is back it lacks a dm I think

Carroll isn't known for his attacking play or a defensive midfielder

Haven't been on this site for some time, and after reading this topic i can remember why now... some absolute clowns on here.

Most know nothing about the player and are still either whinging or slagging him off.

A few people need to give thier heads a wobble...

Absolutely agree with this comment. I don’t think I have posted regarding transfers this window not least because of the vitriol about certain players we have in our squad already  but slagging off a player who has never played for us really takes us to a new level.

i just hope he has a good first game for us otherwise I think VT will go into meltdown😳

I always thought he sat deep and was a decent passer, which is exactly what we need for the style Smith likes.  I fully expect him to get pelters for passing sideways or whatever but he should help us tick over, plus must surely be more mobile than Whelan and co.
