Aston Villa agreed to loan new defender Fred Guilbert back to Caen because they were so keen on wrapping up a deal this month.

The 24-year-old today signed for an undisclosed fee, believed to be around £5million, but will complete the season with the Ligue 1 club rather than moving to the Midlands.

Boss Dean Smith felt Villa were already well-stacked at right-back with Alan Hutton and Ahmed Elmohamady competing for places among others.

But with changes expected in the summer regardless of the division Villa are playing in, Guilbert has been signed with one eye on the future.

Asked why the loan arrangement was included in the deal, Smith said:

“It was part of the agreement with Caen.

They’re fighting a relegation battle and want to keep their best players.

We just felt that we were okay to let him stay there and play until the end of the season.

He’s got time to brush up on his English skills, now too!

When he comes to Birmingham he will be Fred Gilbert.

But for now, he’s Frederic Guilbert.”

Very good indeed it seems, now we have him cut his loan short LMAO.

Very versatile indeed: The 24 year old has played 19 league games for Caen, thirteen as a right-back, five as a centre-back and once as a left-back. This kind of versatility may have been born of necessity, but Aston Villa could use a defensive minded player who can play in well in multiple positions.
