thabucks
Now Nantes have signed Alban Lafont on loan I guess that they have moved on from Kalinic. I wonder if it’s the player or the club pushing for a move most ... He looked shaky in those 8 games but surely worth keeping as back up to Steer unless he hasn’t settled in the UK and wants to go ... ?

I assume he's is thinking he didn't come here to sit on the bench and is now agitating for a move. We probably won't sell him unless we can sign a new keeper first. Surely though he should back himself to win the jersey back rather than sulking and agitating for a move especially as he was injured for part of his time here so far ... or he has been told politely to move on as he won’t play again.. strange signing for sure .

Is he doing this? Would not surprise me if he is looking to move thou as I kinda got that feeling even back in January.

I think all parties here would like a move. Thats not to say its going to happen - there has to be a willing buyer @ around £5m - which imo is the biggest stumbling block. sir_gary_cahill
I thought he was excellent for the 45 minutes of the friendly he played in, not convinced we need a new keeper after seeing that. He was dominant, his distribution was good. He looked like the goalkeeper that I saw in the Nations League for Croatia against England 1
KMitch
You'd think that after 3 years of waiting and finally getting your big move to the Mighty Villa in the Premier League, you wouldn't give up less than 6 months into your time at the club? Something doesn't look right to me... Steer also looked solid for me today. If they both continue to play well throughout preseason, I think we could put the funds we set aside for a goalkeeper into a marquee signing. villalad21
He looked confident. That's a big thing for me. In championship he looked shaky and nervous. That half was the best i've seen from him. Makes me less worried about the gk position.
Farlz
Not judging all this on just 45 minutes of a pre season friendly but I've always been a bit confused as to why he wasn't really given a proper chance. He was rated as a pretty good keeper before he signed and spent just under £10m on him to then be given 2 months and not be used again. As of right now I honestly feel Steer and Kalinic would be fine and therefore possibly spend some funds on attacking reinforcements.

KentVillan
Think DS saw Steer as part of a settled, unbeaten team, so was never going to bring Kalinic back into the mix at such a crucial point in the season. If we buy a better keeper (e.g. Butland) and sell Kalinic, I doubt it's because of any judgment on Kalinic vs. Steer ability-wise. More that Steer has proved that he has the right mentality to sit on the bench, and continue to train hard and perform well if needed. Kalinic has always been a #1 at his previous clubs. Backup keeper is a specialist position - think of Michael Oakes, Stuart Taylor, etc. It takes a certain personality type to sit on the bench for 2 years, ready to go at any moment if needed, and then suddenly be playing 90 mins every week for 3 months, before going back to obscurity again.
Zhan_Zhuang
Is Kalinic still Croatia's No.1 after his lack of games recently (last season)?

He played their 2 Euro qualifier games in March (2-1 home win against Azerbaijan, and 2-1 away loss against Hungary). Livakovic (24-year-old Dinamo Zagreb keeper) came in for the Wales qualifier which they won 2-1, and then some lad called Sluga played in a friendly against Tunisia, but think he's 3rd choice keeper and was just getting some game time. So I reckon we won't really find out until they play Slovakia on 6 September.

AvfcRigo82
Going by the few thumbs up reviews of his 45 minute performance it is encouraging to hear. We have always been aware of his quality and being Croatia's No.1 etc. and while it remains financially sensible to keep him here, sometimes other situations dictate matters that prevent that from happening. We will find out in the coming weeks if things have settled down for him or he is infact, like a few others, playing for the window.
Stevo985 Posted July 19, 2019 VT Supporter Share Posted July 19, 2019 Said it before but I think there’s far more chance Kalinic will be our number 1 this season than Steer. Still think we’ll buy a new keeper but of the keepers we have he will be the more likely to get the gloves.

Went off injured 2-0 down to WBA. Steer couldn't be dropped. Conceded 9 in 13 and half league games to close out season

Steer was performing so he kept his place. I don’t think it was a case of Kalinic not getting a chance.
