Guilbert looked injured to me?

Yes, and Elmo was good.

One big area we lack is fitness and I think there's three non-mutually exclusive reasons. (1) Deficiency in training - I personally think this is not the case as we have good coaches and excellent facilities.  (2) Players new to the league taking time to adapt - this is definitely the case in many circumstances, it takes a long time to build fitness levels for this league. (3) Genetics - not every player can do it for 90 minutes and retain their levels at this level of football, even with loads of fitness training, and this is very much a 'quality' of player issue. Top players at top clubs these days are elite athletes for their sport, we just don't seem to have that calibre of athlete at our club.

You're also right when you talk about concentration issues. Concentration and awareness is poor over the course of a match for most of our players, it's a hard thing to correct that can take a lot of time.

You can't expect our players to maintain fitness when all they do is defend deep and run around chasing players. This is exactly why all the top sides beat us eventually.

Today Smith made subs early enough. Except for Elmo, they didn't have a positive effect.

Konsa for Wesley? Really? That would be exactly what Bruce would do.

No, today Smith got things mostly right. Our players are just not mentally ready yet.

Simple rule in football.

You bring on a striker at 1-0 and concede you should have brought on a defender. You bring on a defender and concede then you should have brought on a striker to hold the ball and get everyone up the pitch.

Football is so simple.

If I was Smith I would just reload from the last save.

Smith doesn't set us up to play that way, this is mostly down to our players IMO. You could see it mid way through the second half, most of them were out on their feet and didn't have the energy or sharpness to find a shirt, didn't look like they could really manage to keep the ball properly at all.

People on here are more bothered by the fact that it was Liverpool that beat us, than that we lost a game, all because of some irrational obssesion with them. If we'd have had the same result against Man City in the same circumstances there would be a completely different reaction.

Have we not tried that a zillion times before? It's not that simple (although football is simple, I agree :))

I’ll do one reply but then stop because it’s not worth it.

I don’t know if you were at the game but people were on their feet second half over and over as we threatened.

We could easily have scored another couple of goals.

If you think some desperate clearances against the runaway league leaders is Big Sam football it’s not worth debating.

Im very proud of our performance and of Deanos contribution as Coach in defensive set up, targeted pressing, some great counter attacking football, commitment and determination.

Well yes our entire tactics are to defend deep and hit them on the counter. Of course we would have chances when Liverpool is pressing their entire team.. not sure how it's related to my post at all though  I'm not criticizing Dean Smith entire plan of this game. In fact he got it spot on mostly.  We have played extremely well. You seem to take criticism of Dean lack of strategy in how to keep the ball instead of hoofing it personally for some unknown reason.

But if you're entirely happy that for 4th time ( Totenham, Everton, Arsenal and Liverpool) same scenario has played out. Literally EXACTLY same (except we scraped a win vs Everton). Then you'll be happy no matter what I think. Criticizing lack of ability to keep the ball and hoofing should be banned I guess

What does get me is those of you who defend the no sale of some players like kodjia, Davis, Elmo, Taylor, Hogan, Lansbury are then wondering why we are losing games in the second half. We need to in the next transfer get rid of these and bring in quality replacements in the places. Villa needs to move to the next level, quality next because we've done quantity, then we might start winning these second half that were losing against the top 6 clubs.

Who would have paid us money for them?  I mean, who is defending not selling players we probably had no bids for whatsoever?

Theres only one way in which we sort the awareness and Conentration out, don't think you can install that into players, sure it will get better but that's why these top 6 clubs have collected the best, it's why they are where they are.

Only way around all that for us is to bring better signings in, our Owners spending is about to be tested. Will they dare try and do what many Owners wont and try and bring a top gun in and spend whatever it costs to sign someone who can take us out of our own half in the second half, that is what we are truly missing and sorely need is a massive ball winner and game changer.

I would go as far as to say that we need this one or two players more than we do a striker or LB, who specialises in obtaining balls in our 2nd half where we can once again start attacking, it's vital we find a couple of players who can do this.

There are some, i remember some saying Hogan still could have a chance, that Kodjia is vital to our plans, Davis is the man and so on. I think the only one I've seen miraculously voted on to get rid is Taylor, in reality those players need to go and none of them are doing villa any favours by being here.

We had the chance to sell Kodjia for 7 mill, 7 bloody mill, if of snapped there arm off for that price and rather would of used someone out the academy, we'd of had just as much chance to get a goal from someone there.

We're lacking on the subs bench big time as well as in our starting 11 in a couple of areas. I don't expect to beat big teams till we start to bring quality in and that's most likely not going to happen till next summer just in case we don't survive and have to sell those signings on.

The lads did great but you can see there's still much needed work to be done still, I just can't wait till Jan as I hope I'm wrong about waiting till summer for a splash out.

Subs were abysmal.

Hourihane for Luiz in a game we barely have the ball makes no sense.

Luiz was the worst of our midfielders today. However, I too would have left him out there as he's more athletic than Hourihane.

It's easy to say in hindsight that "Smith should have bought on this player instead of that player, doing so lost us the game." It's a totally irrelevant criticism, for example he could have bought Konsa on, but he then could have had 9 touches, conceding 9 own goals and we lose 9-1, but he didn't so it doesn't matter. He can only guess how a player might influence the game, they will or they won't, that's on the player not on the manager.

I’m not really sure why people are blaming Smith. We are playing one of the best sides on the World. We played well. Tactics up until 70 mins were spot on. We just tired and got beat by a better team. Subs wise, Guilbert goes off injured so elmo has to come on. Luiz was starting to get overrun, so Conor made sense. Wes was knackered so Kodj made sense. I can imagine the outcry from the same people criticising now if he’d brought Konsa on and we’d still lost, people would’ve been saying it was a negative sub.

Lansbury deserved some minutes after setting up two goals agains wolfs.

The same old story every week. take the lead. gradually get pushed further and further back conseed. subs come on.let in another.

Smith is making the same mistakes he made in august when he destroyed our momentum against spurs by taking off trez and bringing on jota.

Happened every week burnley, arsenal spurs etc. he should do a gregory and it in the stand if he can't see whats happening from the dugout

He obviously prepares the team well as we start strong. but if all goes wubs up after his subs.

and why make trez play 90mins against a load of kids on weds and again today? this guy was breathing out his ring piece.

and why are these lads not fit with the facitlities they have at bodymore. are you telling me teams like burnley hace facilities like that?

I thought their 2 full backs were something else....probably their best 2 players.
