Or promote from the u23s, even if they aren't big units, feet are going to be a lot more important than muscles with Smith methinks.
NoCoder
Congrats Dean on the appointment and here's hoping for a successful stint at Villa. I think this is a solid decision and one that hopefully builds us in the right direction

Morley_crosses_to_Withe
Welcome Third Choice Dean! I do think he was part of the Brentford machine, but I’m excited to see what he can do now he’s going it alone!

We won't but this is definetely out most progressive appointment in years. He loves his teams having the team and expects them to know where to be when they don't. This takes time to implement. But he will and i don't feel he'll compromise on how he wants to play the game. Going forward i can't see hutton and jedinak being part of a Dean Smith side but let the man get in the door first eh. This is the single most impressive thing I’ve seen in Brentford, and, for me, our single biggest weakness under Bruce. Its a lot harder to achieve than it appears - much harder than implementing a ‘passing game’, much harder than implementing a ‘pressing game’, certainly much harder than our current ‘style’......., but it’s priceless. With the quality we have, if (IF !) he can get that going we will become a force. The quicker the better !

With the right management and an actual style in place Hogan will flourish No he won't. He is awful. Thankfully, with kodjia and abraham here he won't be pushing for many starts.

Really ? - I think swansea will be an andrellin fuelled display of attacking football - Full house - new manager - Terry on the touchline - I really wouldn't like to be swansea on that day. Popular Post TrentVilla Posted October 10, 2018 Moderator Popular Post Share Posted October 10, 2018 Absolutely, utterly delighted. I've really admired Smith's work for some time now, both at Walsall and Brentford and anyone who witnessed our games against the later in recent times should be the same. Some were taken in by the glamour of Henry but I firmly and have always firmly believed Smith is a far better suited appointment to where we are as a club. That has nothing to do with him being one of us. The way Smith approaches the game is what I've been desperate to see at VP for years even before the arrival of Bruce. I can't wait to see what he will do with Hogan! At last we've a manager with a real philosophy based on coaching and passing the ball, that takes control of games rather than trying to strangle the life out of them or scrape through them. With Terry's knowledge of the players and club and unquestionable defensive coaching potential I really do think its a great combination. On the Smith the Villa fan thing, a couple of thoughts. What an incredible moment this must be for the guy having once swept the Holte End and won't be nice to have a manager to gets the club and the fan base, who embraces what the club is, was and could be again. A manager who will share our expectations, hopes and dreams rather than down play our chances. Exciting times. 43
villatillidie1980 Posted October 10, 2018 VT Supporter Share Posted October 10, 2018 I wasn’t sold on Smith early on, but the way this sets up with a DOF and JT, I am actually very pleased. Appreciate it will need time but feel the owners may have judged this one bang on and the gap to automatic, with the games, left is fully achievable. My only concern, and this isn’t Deans fault, is only having one decent CB. Who knows, maybe JT will work his magic. Exciting times ahead - UTV!!

From where we are to playing as a proper team will take a long time on the training pitch IMO. Hopefully we smash the shit out of Swansea but if we do it'll be because the attacking talent we have clicks for once. To implement a proper system is going to take lot longer than 10 days.
Popular Post NurembergVillan Posted October 10, 2018 Moderator Popular Post Share Posted October 10, 2018 I've seen some posts here about first choices falling through, and "third choice Dean". But Rui Faria was seemingly never approached even though he said he wasn't interested, Brendan Rodgers said he was never approached, and the Belgian FA said Henry was never approached. Perhaps the board and CEO had a vision for success, and a structure to get there? Perhaps they identified people to suit that structure? Perhaps they've got their first choice targets for all of those roles? Perhaps the delay was just getting compensation agreed for Smith? Surely the media and the bookies weren't just blagging it all along?!

hippo
Good thing for the board wanted a big name - but when it didn't happen they didn't pursue it at all costs - just to get a 'name'
