Well the word is ironic, and it isn't ironic which means sarcastic (sorry, bit of a vocab pedant...). But...why would it be 'ironic' (using your definition) anyway? a club Smith left went up, and then the season after the one he joined went back down, and the side he left went up? So, would it be double ironic* if we go up and Brentford went down the season after that?
Demitri_C
If we win the next three and still go down i think would be hard to justify sacking smith. But id say there is very little chance of that happening

The wider football world couldn’t give two hoots about either club. It would just be cynical fans.

The on the beach factor seems to have kicked in though - although Man City won last night it looked half arsed. Just one win against one of the top sides would have made so much difference. What happened to all the games before these wins, why has it took this long to even start fighting properly. For me getting to the root of these problems that still are at villa must be addressed, finding out who made these signings and if Smith's coaching was and is a problem. If we cant go any further with him then he needs to go, no point sticking with someone if we are not going to improve.

So, would it be double ironic* if we go up and Brentford went down the season after that? Sorry, much as I’m loath to agree with TRO, but ironical is fine. Ironical and ironic mean the same thing - ironic is just a more modern usage. Also neither Ironic nor Ironical mean the same as sarcastic.... “sarcasm” is “a taunting, sneering, cutting, or caustic remark; gibe or jeer, generally ironic.” “Irony,” on the other hand, is most often directed at events or situations, not people. (Someone can be “ironic,” of course, but usually that person is speaking of it, not being the subject of it.) A long wait in a line could yield the “ironic” statement “My, how time flies,” but if, noticing that the cashier can’t count change, someone says, “I guess they’ve got Einstein working up there,” that is “sarcasm” You need to up your pedantry Edited July 16, 2020 by VillaCas
M_Afro
I have always been very critical of Smith but I think he has done much better recently. You can at least see what we are trying to do now and I think he has handled the pressure pretty well. Massive HT talk for him but let’s hope he can help us pull this out of the bag. If we do I promise never to slag him off again........
