I agree.

I’m sick of constantly changing managers, it’s proven that keep changing manager long term doesn’t lead to improvement of the club.  I do concede that staying with a bad manager is also not a good idea.

I would like to build with a manager over a longer duration and happy to have the thick with the smooth as long as there is a long term plan.  I hope that’s with Dean, yes he going through a bad patch at the moment but yeah I hope he can turn it around and we can grow next season with him.

I have the same dilemma.....Yes,I too hope he makes it.

I also have mixed views on the recruitment and the policy behind it. Martin Samuel wrote a good article in the Daily Mail on Friday with regards to Arsenals current structure...it seems to be a modern approach, but is it best practice, that is the crucial question.

I guess we are still in the early days (relatively speaking)of this administration, so we will have to see.

I know.

I'd be gutted if he signs for Newcastle

Just to be 100% honest and clear, i dont believe for a second that we will get rid of Smith regardless.  If we get relegated, i fully expect DS to be given the chance to bring us back.

However, if i were the one calling the shots, I'd have brought Poch in to replace DS as soon as possible after he left Spurs.

I think Poch and DS are quite similar coaches, so would be a relatively smooth transition.  I just think Poch is far better.

Immaterial though as I dont think we want him or that he would join us given our relegation likelihood.

Poch would be a dream come true to be honest, if hes out there for grabs ,god knows why we are not making a play for him.

because Poch is not coming to a relegation battle and a risk of us going down on his CV

And he'll likely have 10-20 more interesting and lucrative projects to choose from as well.

I would be surprised if we ever go for such a high profile manager.

Those type of managers want big money to trade with to make the difference and they have their CV to consider.

Despite our owners having the wherewithal of personal wealth, they will still have their one eye on the clubs self suffiency.

I think the best we can hope for, is our manager will always have a budget of some sort to keep improving.

Keeping within the rules is always a tricky bit for us too, that is another distraction, for big time managers.

FFS Poch is probably getting paid by Spurs 5 times what Dean earns to sit on his arse at home.

Not any more. His gardening leave ended earlier this week. Free to join any club - link below.

He'll be here by the end of the week I tells ya.

Realistically though, in the last 12 months or so he's been linked with United and Real Madrid, I think even Barca when they got rid of Valverde. I have a feeling that Poch will be headed for greater things when he decides to return to football/football returns. Having said that if he ends up going to a newly purchased Newcastle then I will stand corrected on the greater things comment.

If Everton and Newcastle can go for a high profile manager why can't we? Why do we always settle for mediocrity?

Has it ever worked for us?

We have always been reluctant to throw money at it, whatever the financial position of the club.....even our best signings over the years ,have been modest purchases, most of the bigger money have been average joe's

I have no issue with an up and coming manager, who is learning on the job, providing incremental improvement is in evidence.....my only reservation is the trust the financial people have with such a person, when transfer money is being actioned. They tend to only trust them with modest sums.Football is the central ingredient and Football coaches/managers, need the authority to get the job done.....they have to manage UP as well as manage down.

However, the downside of high profile managers is they use us as a stepping stone and when they leave, like O'Neill, it all falls asunder...and an expensive rebuild ensues. They can also over step their authority, due to their profile and always threaten to leave, if they don't get their way.

before Smith we had high profile managers.

Promotion Specialist

Champions League winning manager

up and coming French manager highly touted by Wenger

Sherwood

Lambert who was a hot prospect at time

McLeish just won the League Cup

Houllier

MON

O'Leary 2 years previously was managing Champions League semi final

I'd say MO'N was the last properly high profile appointment.

Houllier was a big name, but was basically coming out of semi retirement to join us, McLeish had just been relegated, Lambert looked promising but he was clearly not high profile. He was up and coming, and it was a step up for him. Sherwood, probably the same, yeah he'd had a quick go at Spurs but we hardly punched above or weight. Same for Garde and Di Matteo.

You could definitely describe some of them in a way that makes them seem like promising appointments, but O'Neill is definitely the last appointment that made me think "shit, we've really got him". The others ranged anywhere from cautious optimism through to absolute astonishment at wtf the club were thinking.

For me the position isn't really the issue - it's the totally inept performances and the complete inconsistency.

The reason we are in that position is because of our performance and our performance is down to the manager. He is the one that decides Tactics, formation, attitude, mindset.

What the owners should do is.Sign Pocho on a 10 year contract with the condition that if he can get us into the top 5,then he gets another 10 year extension on his contract.

It not as silly as it sounds because.1 - he is a proven manager in the Pl ( so there is no risk there )  2 -he is capable of getting a team up into the CL places 3 - He just might relish the chance to take a big club from the Championship/17th in the Pl into the top 5 4 - He might also like a definate long term position so that he can mould the team he wants ( like Fergie did )

And from the owners point of view 1 - He is proven ( so they know what they are getting for their money ) 2 -They want Champions league football ( Pocho is the guy to deliver it )3 - A long term and steady management of the team must be good for everyone.

Another way to look at it ( as far as plebians like us are concerned ) is, you have $100.You can buy something for $40 that MIGHT WORK or you can spend the whole $100 on something that definately works.

Not sure I'd be comfortable with 10 year contract because you just know it will go completely wrong and over that time given his salary that would like to be compensation between £50-100m (assuming weekly salary of £100-200k).  Maybe a contract with trigger points or stage gates expanding on what you said but compensation would have to be set at reasonable figures, decreasing closer to the end of the contract. Maybe review points, and maybe bigger bonuses based on positions.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love Poch and happy to really invest in him long term but we have to protect ourselves somewhat because it could easily go really wrong and all we have is a big payout when he's put on gardening leave for 7 years when it's going wrong.

Getting Poch though seems a pipe dream anyway but we can dream.
