Popular Post peterw Posted September 28, 2021 Popular Post Share Posted September 28, 2021 Hughton has got plaudits in the top flight, Wilder was the next great thing, Potter is oft mentioned, and then you've have the gravy train barely out of a job merchants despite repeated failure (Hughes, Allardyce, Bruce, Pardew, Coleman etc) and then you have Dean Smith. What he has done with Villa is incredible to date and yet the media barely mention it (when we improved defensively after lockdown it was because of John terry - when we were scoring 7 past Liverpool and demolishing Arsenal it was Jack Grealish), and even more strange that some of our own fans are so deluded that they think we have a given right to be where we are without having to put the hard work in. The whole club was rotten in 2015/6 then Lerner sold to a chancer and we nearly went to the wall. Smith come in and we - again - were midtable Championship. He took that team up and with players coming t the end of their contracts, loan players going back, and others deemed just not good enough we had to spend a packet to just try and compete. We started brightly but without covid we would probably have gone - but Dean Smith used that time and changed us. We suddenly had become very difficult to beat and stayed up. On top of that we get to a major Cup final where we gave a Man City a good game after making it 2-1. Last season was a success in terms of making some statements but where we lacked was our squad. Once Grealish was out then the squad wasn't deep enough to cover that loss. So Smith identified the areas that we needed cover and when and got those players. Not just any players but due diligence done and we bring in the 'right' type of players. For two summers on the trot we have been lauded as have having the best transfer windows regarding our in-comings. That is also Smith. Yes, there are others involved but he has the final yes or no say on who is coming in. Yes Smith has money and he and we are lucky in that regard. But that in itself brings its own pressure, as does manging a big club that demands success. We have no rights to demand it as we've won next to nothing since 1982, yet we demand it. He goes about what he does very well and speaks well when interviewed. Never too high after a win, and never too low after a defeat. It seems to be a happy camp and he is in charge of it. The longer the better and if he can lift a trophy he could down as being one of our very best. I made comment earlier today, that it reminds me of people being over defensive of Jack Grealish. They then naturally thought they had to put down every other English player they felt was keeping him out of the side, to big him up. As if both scenarios can't be true. So it's almost as if people see, bigging up another English manager, as a slight, or threat, on Dean ( Mind you, for some, it probably is ). On another note, I think people ( Myself included) have probably been a bit guilty of not rating Dean as much, due to our progress being relatively slow and stable, and subconsciously hitting panic buttons when we see perceived " lesser clubs " shoot up trees with less investment etc. I've come to realise that alot of that is sometimes only temporary, then again, there are many variables around each scenario we could debate forever. Someone could easily turn round and say " Brentford under Smith - Mid Table and playoff losers " " Brentford under Frank - Playoff finalist and Premier League promotion " But that wouldn't be painting a fair picture. I guess, if you were trying to argue that one was better than the other. I'm just saying not much has changed about the club bar the style of football for all intents and purposes. " Slow " was probably the wrong choice of word, I probably more meant " steady ". Notable and consistent, but not spectacular, if that makes any sense. Managers aren't often thought of in this way. He's not just made us better season-on-season, he's also progressed a lot himself as a coach. When we first came up, he had a tremendously small amount of top-flight experience himself (he may have played some cup games against top flight teams but that's about it) and our management team was largely in the same boat (Terry had experience of playing, but never coaching/managing players of that level). He looked naive in the first half of the season, as we played the way he wants to play but with players who weren't capable of translating that into wins. The pressure that created made it very difficult and the break came as a blessing, as he was able to take stock and put that reflective brain of his to good use. He hasn't looked back since then and has grown as a manager as much as some of our most improved players have. He's now got even better coaches around him to learn from too, and the team is free to express itself more completely rather than be there to get the most out of one brilliant player. I get your point and I agree that DS fares favourably against Potter, but I think it does Potter a bit of a disservice. They were a decent/in form striker away from much bigger numbers last year. Panto_Villan Posted September 29, 2021 Share Posted September 29, 2021 The thing I like about Smith is the way that he approaches the job means we're never really going to take a significant backward step while he's here. It's possible he'll lose his job if we invest a load of money and don't make enough progress, but if that happens we'll have a good squad and a well-run club that will make the job of the next manager much easier. That's not something you can say about all managers. Though I enjoyed our success under MON he left the club a smoking wreck when he left, whereas this new period of success under Smith doesn't feel like a gamble in the same way. It feels like we've found a something sustainable here. Much of that is due to the owners too (i.e. all the investment in youth) but the manager clearly has to be a big part of that process too, and Smith seems to be the glue holding it all together. 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

The team walked out at Old Trafford 'heads high' and looking confident. Alex Ferguson used to teach a similar way, it is a confidence game, believe in yourself and those around you. My favourite example of that was the 1996 League Cup Final against Leeds. When the two teams came out on the pitch before the kickoff, the Leeds players all looked nervous and quiet. They kept looking over at the Villa lads who were bouncing around, laughing and looking raring to go.
