Nuno was brought in to develop a philosopy at Wolves and they expected it to take a least 2 years until promotion. I suspect the same approach is being planned at Villa. They probably hoped he’d be given more slack because he’s one of us. My concern is he won’t be given enough time due to mounting pressure from some of our fans. Blimey! It’s started already.... Some of those callers really have been eating lead for breakfast or something. "We won the european cup, we deserve to be in the premier league" etc. We won the european cup 2 years before Glen Whelan was born, and Jack Grealish was 11 when Randy Lerner bought us. Currently, we are a mid-table championship club, and the form and results shows this, this is the reality we are facing. We can't delude ourselves that it should be different. It isn't. We deserve to be where we are, and that is where we are. Until we lose this expectation that we should be winning every game (with the squad we have?!), the fans will get on the backs of the players and we will continue to have this god awful manager merry go round. Yes, some of the results have been utter garbage. It takes time to turn a ship that has been so far adrift for so long. Give him some time, at least. We weren’t mid-table last season though, we finished 4th and were 90 minutes and 1 goal away from the premier league. So, ignore all the talk about what happened in tne early 80s, we have fallen back significantly on where we were just 12 months ago. In my view the reasons for this have little to do with the unrealistic expectations of fans - wanting the club to be better than mid table Championship standard is hardly outrageous. It has to do with the chaotic actions of our last owner and the failure of our managers this season. Those are the issues we need to see addressed. Can't disagree with this, to be fair, but it is what it is, the owners have taken action and are trying to deal with an aging squad, loanees who probably don't care that much and our main and most expensive asset being crocked for too long. I too want the club to be better, but to change a whole squad of (further aging) cloggers takes more than 3 months, wouldn't you agree? I'm really encouraged by the signings we have made, McGinn, especially, if we can continue to get players of that caliber in, the future looks a lot brighter, long term gain, short term pain. I want to at least afford Dean Smith the same luxury (He wasn't my first choice either). Admittedly partially because he is "one of our own" and partially I've accepted all the mitigating circumstances which will affect his early tenure. What baffles me is how people can't factor in that we finally have very good owners, we are putting in place a totally new structure to modernise the club. For the first time in a long time i believe in the "project" Again, if Dean does not succeed, the platform will have been put into place for another Head Coach after this summer. We can attract better "gems" than the likes of Brentford, and most if not all the clubs currently down here for that matter. Tweaks might need to be made to the coaching set up re: Terry etc. I think we will be fine long term, my worry is that he cracks under the pressure ( Of being one of our own and not being liked - criticised so early etc). I find it saddening that he already has to be getting defensive, as the fan base is REALLY showing that we have ZERO loyalty or patience. I fear if we continue to massacre all our managers we become less attractive for both players and managers. People mention that "he has failed to address the loss of Jack and Tuanzebe" without realsiing that all the midfielders he was probably hoping could come in and add another dimension have themselves been struck with injury and so on and so on. They've played well against, and beaten Premier league teams. Their expectations / needs are not as high as ours. Theyre above us in the league and their form is better.
