This meme that he needs a rest as he has been overplayed is ridiculous. 17 games is not a lot, we should expect him to be able to play that amount of games and be at peak level. The problem is him, he's not fit enough, clearly not working hard enough on both his fitness and his game. Frankly the quality he has been showing on the ball for the past 2 months is Championship standard. Not good enough, needs to pull his finger out and start delivering.

Its not ridiculous, one of the problems is his style of play and the fact hes incapable of managing his own energy levels throughout the game....hes burnt out and its blindingly obvious! Requires coaching to iron out some of the pointless runs with and without the ball. Some small adjustments in his play will go a long way.

Thing is, a lot of these games he's been medicore in, he's been mediocre from the start. If its energy levels that's problem you'd expect to see a big drop off from the start of the match to the end, and maybe this is part of the issue but it doesn't fully explain why he's been poor from the start of the match. And you'd also expect him to be better in matches where he had a decent amount of rest before and worst in matches where he didn't have a lot of rest before yet there's really not much difference in his performances either way.

It's very little to do with McGinn, but a lot to do with tactics.

My only McGinn complaint is that he needs to do it simpler more often.

Yep, I can't find the tweet but Mcginn is tops for longest passes played. He never takes the simple option.  Can't figure out if that's a Mcginn thing or an instruction from Dean.

Aston Villa's John McGinn is unlikely to start Tuesday's Carabao Cup quarter-final against Liverpool after playing through the pain recently.

The midfielder was in considerable discomfort following Villa's 2-0 win over Newcastle last month, and a scan revealed a tear to a thigh muscle, thought to have sustained playing for Scotland.

McGinn has been having painkilling injections to get through matches, and was not able to take a full part in training sessions.

He is believed to have resumed normal training only last week, even though he still played every minute of the games against Manchester United, Chelsea and Leicester.

Despite the damage, the 25-year-old is keen to continue playing to help Villa ease their relegation fears.

Well that would explain an awful lot as to why he's looked so under par.

I would seriously question Smith's management of Mcginn if this were true. Playing 90 minutes of all those games, games that we were unlikely to gain much points of, putting him at risk for the next 3 crucial games we do have as well as possibly worsening the injury. Like seriously, Smith should've given him a rest, its not as if he was contributing that much during those games.

Doesn't sound good. Hopefully it explains where the hell John McGinn has been.

This will have been signed off by the medical staff as something that does not cause more damage.

100%.

Grealish was banging on Smith's door for months last season and again this year when he had that innocuous injury v City. The medical staff told Smith it could damage him so he didn't play.

Pity they wasn't more proactive with Ming's . McGinn, something needs to change , if he's injured then that explains his lack of influence on the games but he seems to get lost in games. Strange when we are losing so many second balls in the middle.

I like the idea of.

if this is true it is terrible player and squad management.

McGinn has been poor by his standards and an injured McGinn has likely been less useful than a fit Nakamba, Hourihane or Luiz would have been.

Hindsight and all that but 6 losses in 8.

If he was carrying an injury and even if relatively minor then it was a perfect excuse to rest him so seems crazy that he wasn't.

Sounds like hes almost recovered from it so hopefully we'll see some of the old John back at the weekend. If I was Smith I would be thinking about starting him from the bench though.

An injury would at least explain his suffering performances recently.

If this news is true I seriously question why Smith thought it was a good idea to continue playing him, particularly with Lansbury, Hourihane and Douglas on the bench at times and more winnable fixtures coming up. Why not rest him, take stock of our back-up CMs and have him fresh for the Southampton, Norwich and Watford games?

FFS.

The medical staff and Smith needs to be seriously questioned here.

I thought this was the reason we bought a squad?

Tell that to Chester.

ah the Daily Mail, the fountain of knowledge

Let’s all believe the Daily Mail when it suits our anti Smith agenda.

Smith didn’t even put our head and shoulders stand out player on the bench for 2 games when he wasn’t 100% fit. As if he would play an injured Mcginn every single minute.

People believe anything.

Smith did this with Chester too so it wouldn't be the first time.

There is no Smith agenda. It got to be allowed to criticize without having an agenda.
