Villa should build up from the U23 - not down from the 1st XI. Let's have none of those anarchic thoughts on here please. The club are quite capable of spending zillions on overpriced underperforming imports, many of whom don't even need to play to confirm their justification to earn their massive salaries. If we even started thinking that some of the youngsters (young at U23 ?) might be better options it could end up in total chaos you know.

U 23 is a misnomer - as far as Villa are concerned - here is the current age group breakdown:- 22 - 1 player - out on loan (Lyden) 21 - 3 players (Sarkic, Taylor & McKirdy) 20 - 7 players (inc 2 out on loan) 19 - 12 players (inc 2 out on loan) 18 - 4 players (incl 3 of our first choice U23 defence) 17 - 10 players (several of whom have made the U23 bench) 16 - 1 player (sub GK in the recent BSC match v Coleshill Town - 17 tomorrow) The average age of the team that destroyed Bristol City was just over 19 - yet theoretically Grealish is still qualified to play. !! spineynorman
Is it just our club where "youngsters" have come to be regarded with such suspicion by certain managers rather than encouraged and given a chance ? I suppose someone will produce stats that show average ages are falling or something like that but it seems to me that we rarely regard anyone under the age of about 24 as "ready" for the first team (with very occasional exceptions like Grealish and maybe Green). Given my view that the current crop are actually pretty reasonable footballers, I would like someone to demonstrate to me that Taylor / Hutton etc are a better bet than say the odd outing by Clark (though he could fill in elsewhere where I believe we may have been short recently) or Bjarnasson / Whelan compared to Doyle Hayes or Hourihane / Adomah / Lansbury (remember him) compared to O'Hare, just as an occasional outing so as not to scare people. We got to the position last season as I recall where Keinan D was only selected because, short of asking someone from the crowd to fill in, we had no strikers left to pick. If I was an U23 winger, I would look at the three wingers we have in our first team squad and see none of them picked and think my future might well need to be somewhere else so I ask the question, is there a point in having an U23 team ?
BOF Posted October 10, 2018 Author Moderator Share Posted October 10, 2018 I've decided to incorporate the Birmingham Senior Cup results etc into the front page. The stats will be as complete as we can get them. 1

BOF Posted October 22, 2018 Author Moderator Share Posted October 22, 2018 Final score 5-2 to Newcastle. The plus side was a brace for O'Hare.
Popular Post OutByEaster? Posted October 22, 2018 Moderator Popular Post Share Posted October 22, 2018 Entertaining game that. We didn't deserve to lose it 5-2, but we did deserve to lose it. Newcastle were physically too much for us, faster, stronger and bigger - which shouldn't take away from the fact that they also played some very good football. 5-4 would have been a fairer result I think, which is petty of me, but meh. It was open and entertaining from the off, we looked very open at the back with not a great deal of protection for the centre halves, but we carried a threat through some of our talent up front. O'Hare showed a poachers instinct for the opener, a great cross field ball by young Callum Rowe finding Blackett-Taylor whose cross was a little deep, Knibbs just about got a toe on it but could only hit the post and O'Hare finished it well. A slip by Bazeley-Graham let Newcastle in for an equaliser and they went ahead almost immediately in an end-to-end first half. O'Hare gee'd up the troops and then ignored them to drove at the heart of the defence alone and hit a lovely curling strike from 25 yards to bring us back on terms. Newcastle's third was the goal of the night by Sean Longstaff, an arrow from five yards outside the corner of the box - he looked a tremendous prospect, tall, agile and with an eye for a pass - keep an eye out for him. From there we looked a bit dishevelled for a bit, conceding again and then giving up a fifth in the second half before a late rally saw us take the game to them in the final stages. We've won a few games well of late and it's good to see how they react to conceding a lot of goals and being behind - there was much for the coaching staff to take in from the body language of the players. Individually, Callum O'Hare shone - two goals and a couple of other good efforts. I'm not sure what young Callum will become in the game, but he's a player I will always want to watch - he makes things happen, buzzes around, dribbles and battles and has an intent to his play that livens up any team. His immediate future might depend on what the watching Dean Smith made of this one. Clark and Doyle-Hayes did okay but are maybe a little similar, Bazeley-Graham struggled at centre back and despite flashes Blackett-Taylor was never able to impose himself. There were a couple of players that didn't have their best games, but impressed upon me more in the way they're now looking than the way they performed on the evening. Neither played well, but both might have a future. Firstly, Jacob Badeau - he was okay tonight, passable, as okay as a centre back in a defence conceding five goals gets, on the performance he's nowhere near the first team - but by the looks of things, he's closer than I would have thought at six o'clock - he's noticeably filling out and growing, he's got big shoulders and he looks a much stronger athlete - he's now a near full sized centre back and that more than anything gives me the hope that there's a player here who will have bigger nights ahead. For Jacob, the future might be brighter than the evening. Secondly, a young man just starting on that physical journey - Harvey Knibbs - I thought he was poor tonight, he was chasing balls over the top and trying to hold the ball up - he's technically okay, but he lacked the pace to get around the back of the defence and when holding the ball up, he's lightweight and struggled a little bit, but, and it's an important but - he's a tall fella made almost entirely out of bones right now - in eighteen months time when there's another stone of chest to him, the technical ability he has and the work he puts in could make him a bit of a handful - right now, defending him is like wrestling a kitten - but there's something about his frame that suggests that before too long he'll be a whole different animal. Beyond that, Jake Walker has calves like the legs of a snooker table; he's a determined young man who tucks his shirt in. The sub keeper would bang his head on a lamppost, "Shoot it" is close, but not quite right, it will never be too cold for Mark Delaney to not wear shorts, one of our subs looks a bit like Morrissey and that blummin' Mitchell Clark sat in front of me again. Well played Newcastle, unlucky Villa. We could have had more in a cracking little game of football - they'll have learned a lot. We erm... go again? 3
