is this why World War 3 is trending on twitter?!

Yeah. Hopefully it won’t come to open war but it’s hard to exaggerate what a big deal this is. He was a very, very bad man, and the No.2 in Iran behind the Ayatollah.

Iranian, therefore slightly more evil than Mordor.

If I were on the flights en route to Iran from the US when the attack happened, I think I'd be shitting myself right now. You're nowflying in to am enemy state, unlucky.

An impeached president ordering an assassination of a foreign military leader. **** hell.

I wonder what his motivation was

He’s like Iran’s Bin Laden and responsible for killing many 100’s of Americans (& Brits for that matter), most recently last week near Kirkuk. He commanded Iranian operations in Syria supporting Assad, mentored Lebanese Hezbollah, built Iraqi Hezbollah, responsible for Khobar Towers bombing in Saudi, his CV could go on for a long while.

The strike seems to have been on a convoy of vehicles outside the airport and also killed the No.2 Lebanese Hezbollah & several senior members of Iraqi Hezbollah in the same op. It’s a massive strike against the leadership networks of the most powerful terrorist ground in Middle East.

The Iranians will be very cross.

Nobody is arguing he's s good bloke. But none of this is news. None of it justifies Trump ordering an assassination of a cabinet level official of another country while Congress is in recess. Why do you think this was ordered now and not a week ago, or next week? It's all act of war, not a routine counter terror operation.

Over the years he ranted loads about how Obama would start a war with Iran to get reelected. As he so often does, he's given away his own motivations.

The sad thing about Iran is that they have a huge population under 35 (kind of reverse baby boomers) born after the Iran-Iraq war in ho are actually quite Liberal and don't have much time for all the religious zealotism. There's a good chance it would have just died out or a revolution would have come from within anyway but stuff like this risks alienating that part of the population as well.

Pompeo visited Iraq in mid-December after several Iran sponsored rocket attacks on American or joint American-Iraqi (anti-ISIS) bases. He warned that if an American was killed the US would respond “firmly & decisively.”

That line was crossed last week and it turns out he wasn’t kidding.

wow, this is certainly a "watch this space" moment.

Iran can't really react with war, but they can react with terrorism. I wonder if something big will go off in the coming weeks.

Very possible. Soleimani built dozens of proxy groups in the region and the the IRGC/Quds Force have cells from Latin America & West Africa to Singapore.

The Israelis will be twitchy too as Hezbollah’s No.2 was in the same convoy. The US has thrown down the gauntlet now, impossible to predict what happens next.

I remember the Trump fans saying it was Clinton that would start WW3 with her Middle East policy.

She most likely would have to be honest.

What I do find hilarious is that Trump clearly convinced a lot of 'independents' and even some democrats on his non interventionist stance but he has done the exact opposite over his tenure.

Imagine if it was the other way round.

Iran killing the Mossad boss and a high ranking Halliburton guy in a strike against Israel.

The other way around would be the Iranians killing the Mossad boss in Lebanon while he was organising attacks against Iranian diplomats and soldiers across the region.

Spoiler alert: they’d love to.

What do you think the response would have been?

So they bombed Iraq, to kill a high profile Iranian?

Wtf

Yes, he was a 'bad guy' but you don't assassinate high ranking individuals of countries you're not at war with. That's how you start wars.

Similar to what we’ll likely see now, lots of explosions. The Iranians have been flirting with this for a while, difference is previous US presidents refused to match Iranian provocation with escalation. Trump has taken a different route.

Past few months the Iranians have attacked oil tankers with mines, then shot down a US drone, then attacked Saudi oil facilities with missiles, then attacked US forces in Iraq, then attacked the US embassy in Baghdad with proxy militias.

The intent is to force the US out of the region, but the risk was always that the Americans pushed back. We’ll see soon what Iran does next.

Are we 100% that Iran did all those things, seem a bit too convenient.

Obama was the king of drone strikes, granted mostly directed towards other than Iranians.

Israel has handled the assassinations of Iranians for the most part, the number of Iranian nuclear scientists and what they feel are terrorist that have been killed in car bombs or other attacks over the years is pretty huge.

And the Stuxnet attack is both brilliant and the most blatant act of war and terrorism since 9/11
