We're desperately short at the back. I think the first six signings any manager should make would be a goalkeeper, three centrebacks and two left backs. I don't think there's another team in football so unbalanced. I know I've never seen a Villa squad so strong at one end of the pitch and so weak at the other. I think our forward line would be in the argument for the best in the division. I think our back line would be in the argument for the worst in the division. A new manager coming in will need to make that point long and loud. Pep, Jose and a 40 year old Ron Saunders would struggle to get wins out of this squad right now - and I think if we expect a new manager to come in and suddenly turn us around we're in for a rude awakening and he's in for a really hard time of it. The new man whoever it may be will need to make a lot of noise about the weakness of our defence if he's to allow himself a honeymoon that lasts until January, when hopefully there's scope under FFP for us to sort it out. 6 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Quoted on the very slim chance someone from the club reads message boards and might mistakenly think any of these old boys would be welcomed by fans or effective at the club. Big Sam is the best of that bad bunch but any of them would surely drive away even more fans. Really we have waited years and endured crap for a decade or more now, a manager who sets us up to play attractive football is not that big an ask. A 'modern manager who plays attractive football' sounds good in theory but in reality the chances of our owners picking one with actual quality is slim at best. All the while we have 2 genuine top 10 quality Premier League managers as candidates (Ranieri and Allardyce) who will most likely be ignored over a ridiculous concept of 'style'. What a joke. What insights do you have that enable you to discern that our owners selecting a suitable candidate is 'slim at best'? Or, that NSWE will have the whims of the supporters 'ridiculous concept of style' being met, as a priority in any presentation made by an applicant? We do need a modern, or to rephrase, contemporary manager. Someone who understands the challenges at present and can adjust accordingly. The greatest flaw of any intelligent person, Michael, is to think they are smarter than the others in the room. Platt has treated the club with contempt since he left. Its very well documented. And tbh, there isn't anything positive coming out of this club and hasn't been for a long while. So in answer to your question, not at the moment, no. I'm a realist and it's served me very well in life, I don't wear claret and blue tinted glasses and think we are better than we are, that we have superstar players and that we are getting Wenger as manager. In fact, I am almost always right in what I predict regarding the Villa and yet still get comments like yours thrown at me. I tell it like it is and some people don't like that. They prefer to have their head in the clouds. Which is up to them tbh. Anyway..... I only pointed out that contrary to your point about players being touched by the club, my favourite ever Villa player doesn't share that view. (Which I despise him for) That's all.
