Report: Former Aston Villa midfielder Jordan Veretout now worth more than double

Former Aston Villa midfielder Jordan Veretout is thriving at Fiorentina.

To say Jordan Veretout's spell at Aston Villa was not a success would be an understatement.

By any definition, Veretout was a 'flop' for the Villans, failing to make an impact and making more appearances out on loan than he did for the club.

Villa sold the Frenchman to Fiorentina in 2016 for a fee reported by the Birmingham Mail to be £6.25 million.

Veretout has been thriving in Serie A, so much so that his value has reportedly doubled since.

Italian outlet Viola News report: "Fiorentina has paid seven million (Euros), now the Frenchman is worth more than double.

"His adventure in Italy has been a success, so much so that he has attracted the international spotlight of the market, especially from Spain and France."

Veretout always appeared to have talent, but it did not click for him at Aston Villa.

His acquisition seemed poorly thought out, yet his lack of success was more a failure of coaching on the part of Tim Sherwood and Remi Garde.

If he had been convinced to stick around and play in the Championship he could have turned his fortunes at the club around.

Veretout has five Serie A goals this season and seven in all competitions, equalling the best of his career at Nantes, achieved the season before he signed with Villa.

Another thats doing well

That Veretout and Amavi would be doing well was a given considering where they ended up.

Good club choices for both of them.

Young players with obvious potential and talent.

Villa just wasn't the right time and place for them at that point. It wasn't for anyone other than those happy to pick up large paychecks for doing f all. And we had a fair share of those.

Don't buy this "not suited to English football" crap.

2nd best player behind Mannone as some sort of ringing endorsement

They lost 3-0, didn't have a shot on target and had 22% possession.

He's crap.

This is the Mannone at fault for one of the goals as well and made a meal of a few basic saves

Mannone was "single-handedly keeping them in the game" up until half time according to the commentary I was reading.

Just to stipulate, that wasn't a dig at Mannone, more trying to highlight that he was the only player to emerge from the Reading team with any credit - the entire outfield XI were utter gash.

You mean apart from Bacuna.

Didn't you read what a few blokes wrote on a random Reading forum?

Reading with Bacuna - 9 wins, 8 draws, 15 losses (11 of these came from Wolves x2, Fulham away, Villa away, Boro away, Preston away, Sheffield United x2, Bristol x2 and Millwall on their unbeaten run)

Reading without Bacuna  - 1 win, 5 draws, 7 losses

Villa midfield/right backs:

Conor Hourihane: 39 League appearances, 38 starts. 10 goals, 2 assists

Robert Snodgrass: 38 League appearances, 37 starts. 7 goals, 14 assists

Albert Adomah: 38 League appearances, 33 starts. 14 goals, 5 assists.

Henri Lansbury: 9 League appearances, 5 starts. 2 goals, 3 assists.

Mile Jedinak: 16 League appearances, 8 starts. 1 goal.

Glen Whelan: 33 League appearances, 30 starts. 1 goal, 1 assist.

Josh Onomah: 32 League appearances, 19 starts. 4 goals, 3 assists.

Ahmed El Mohamady: 43 League appearances, 36 starts. 5 assists.

Alan Hutton: 28 appearances, 25 starts. 2 assists.

Bacuna wouldn’t get anywhere near our team.

When you sign serial losers like Bacuna you foster a mentality that not competiting is acceptable, and that spreads through the team. A player who continually was quoted as the last to arrive to training by his teammates as if it was somewhat amusing. No wonder they have gone from play offs to getting turned over 4-0 at home to Ipswich whilst in a relegation fight. So glad we don't have these **** LOSERS around this team anymore.

With bacuna I don’t think it was just the loser mentality. Let’s not forget this was a player that tried to fight his own team mates when they wouldn’t let him have a freekick, someone who threw a hissy fit when the manager asked him to play a different position and someone who squared up to an assistant referee (all at Villa Park). Every time we lost in the relegation year, he was the one laughing on the pitch as it didn’t matter, he was happy picking up that pay cheque. He was the epitome of how low our club had fallen and I couldn’t be happier that he is now failing.

I've only finished page 3 and I've never seen a thread sum up the last decade of villatalk better. Absolute comedy gold, complete madness, classic GIFs, any excuse for a pun and the occasional sensible paragraph discussing football.

mmm the FIFA rankings of the team of 2016 at the beginning of the season. A force to behold:

Goalkeepers

Brad Guzan - 79

Mark Bunn - 71

Poor Jed Steer. I say we give him an honorary 68.

Defenders

Micah Richards - 79

Ciaran Clark - 77

Jores Okore - 77

Jordan Amavi - 75

Leandro Bacuna - 73

Alan Hutton - 73

Nathan Baker - 72

Philippe Senderos - 72

Jose Angel Crespo - 70

Richards becomes the only other Villa player to get a 79, and ties Guzan for highest on the club. You've got to think that there's loads of room for Amavi to grow.

Midfielders

Carlos Sánchez - 77

Jordan Veretout - 76

Ashley Westwood - 75

Idrissa Gana - 75

Carles Gil - 74

Charles N'Zogbia - 74

Scott Sinclair - 74

Kieran Richardson - 73

Joe Cole - 72

Jack Grealish - 72

Weird to see Richardson listed as a midfielder, but I suppose that's a hold out from previous seasons. And Gana being ranked lower than Veretout is criminal.

Attackers

Jordan Ayew - 76

Libor Kozak - 74

Rudy Gestede - 73

Gabby Agbonlahor - 73 (pace still a blistering 90)

Adama Traoré - 71 (also with a 90 pace)
