sharkyvilla
I still think the easiest thing across the board would be to base it on reaction time. If you say all players have a second* to react and get their arm out of the way of the ball, otherwise it's handball. The technology should already exist to be able to calculate it. At least it would have a standard set across all games fairly. *it doesn't have to be a second, that's just a number I plucked out of thin air
foreveryoung
PGMOL have told Steve Cooper to do one with the possible offside, but still are not showing, publicy anyway, when the ball actally left the players foot, or even the full picture. I really think they have succumb to the fact the cameras they use for VAR are actually shit, an just show a blurr. So until they get automated we are not going to see this anymore I guess

Davkaus
It has to be 'sustained' now? Where's that in the rules? He drags back a player who was otherwise about to receive the ball in the box in a position to either get a shot away or a cross. It's a clear penalty. It's also a foul in the box with no attempt to play the ball, against a player heading towards goal, so arguably also a red card, but there's some subjectivity there. KentVillan
I’d love someone to do a study of marginal “open to interpretation” calls by refs and VAR. I generally think the refs get most things right, and VAR picks up the obvious stuff reasonably well. But it’s where this grey area exists that VAR now seems to open to corruption or unconscious bias. Stuff where the wording of the laws makes it possible to pick either outcome - that’s where VAR has the possibility to be a tool to help certain teams. Ultimately professional football is a form of entertainment, a very profitable one. I don’t think the game is totally bent - but refs are conscious of the entertainment product when they make their decisions.
AndyClarke
Two absolutely disgraceful decisions yesterday, how anybody who has even a minute interest in Football could see Martinez 2 footed tackle and Fofana's pull back on Summerville as anything other than a red and a penalty is beyond me. These aren't people with a minute interest, these are professionals, being paid huge amounts of money to **** it up every week.

I'd actually argue that in the context of the PL they really aren't We've got 18 year olds in the academy yet to kick a ball for us earning 5x what an average ref earns And I think that's genuinely part of the problem

I watched one of our u21s drive away from Bodymoor, like a moron, in his expensive Mercedes with personalised plates. He's barely kicked a ball at the level he is now supposed to be at and seems to spend most of his time watching his peers (injured or otherwise). Ridiculous really. foreveryoung Posted Saturday at 20:47 Share Posted Saturday at 20:47 It's getting a bit messy with the VAR rules now. I don't think the refs have any idea how to use them. The Newcastle game earlier was a prime example.

You could see the Everton defender throwing the Newcastle player to the ground yet it took them 3-4 minutes to award it and even then it took VAR to send the ref to the screen rather than just awarding then pen as they should have done.
