Our defence has improved because of John Terry and the assuring effect he has had on SJ

It‘s not down to Calderfook

And and what about the two and half months that Terry's been injured?

Wake me up when Terry is back.

We can then compare the league table before and after and also the ppg ratio

Nah! can't be the players, they don't have much to do with it......best squad in the league.....its must be the coaches;)

just trying to keep a bit of consistency, is all.

normally the true answer is somewhere in the middle. But not in this case.

But keep it up Tro. By the time it sinks in that we are still here come August 2018, it‘ll be too late.

Bruce will only prove you wrong, so you can enjoy the pleasure of watching it all unravel before your very own eyes.

At Last we agree on something.

Nothing has to sink in.......you make your points, I can't say you are wrong, but bear in mind, we both agree on the football being poor.....its just where the blame lies we differ.

I just think its a combination of factors.

FWIW

The factor for me which has had the biggest affect on our football club is recruitment.....Despite the fact that we have signed some really good players in the last 10 years, in the main (IMO)) The main volume has been pants particularly in respect of consistency of form........We have also let go of a fair few players better then what we have recruited. I think this area has been a major set back for us...I cringe when we sign a player, particularly for big money...........Loans relax me a bit, that cannot be right, I should be excited.

I think Houllier was a great manager, took some time for the players to adapt to his style of play but the way we played towards the end of that season was the best I have seen us play in many years.

Houllier was a great manager in 2001, not when he pitched up here in semi retirement.

Managerial equivalent of when we signed the likes of Ginola, Joe Cole and Schemichel.

And you do realise that was Gary McCallister? We were in a relegation battle until Houllier stepped aside

Perhaps off topic in this thread, but I think that in the last games that McCallister stepped in he more or less reaped the reward of the work that had been done over the year, of which McCallister himself played a part of course. We had a settled playing style, the players looked like they knew what to do and we played some good football.

Steve Agnew arrives

Aston Villa have added former Middlesbrough head coach Steve Agnew to their coaching team.

The 52-year-old has been on gardening leave at Boro since the summer following their relegation from the Premier League and joins Villa in the role of first team coach.

Agnew stepped into the hotseat on Teesside after Aitor Karanka was sacked by Steve Gibson in March and guided the club to one win from 11 matches.

But he has now accepted Steve Bruce's invitation to join his coaching staff and has been taking coaching sessions at Bodymoor Heath this week.

Agnew worked alongside Bruce at Hull City before accepting Boro's offer to become assistant manager to Karanka in 2014.

And the Villa manager is chuffed to have strengthened his coaching team. He said: "It's something I've been working quietly on over the last couple of months in particular where I knew Steve was a bit dormant, if that's the right word. I have always worked with three if I could. He's an excellent coach.

"Colin (Calderwood) is still my assistant but I've put Steve as the head of coaching. I've had a word with Colin and Stephen Clemence in particular and they're fine with that. They know he's part of the team going forward and he's here to help us. I had a great relationship with him at Hull so let's hope he can work a bit of magic on the training pitch."

Agnew has already taken several first team training sessions and will take on the bulk of the coaching work throughout the week.

"It's a different voice, it's different ideas, it's a different way forward," Bruce added. "Already we've seen a difference in training.

"There's nothing quite like freshening it up. He's incorporated Stephen, Colin and myself on the training ground.

"To get somebody like him and with the beauty of having worked with him before, I'll know what he'll bring.

"It's vitally important that all your preparation work is geared to what you do on a Saturday so the more help you can get on the training ground, the better. He's a wonderfully gifted coach."

Sounds positive
