Death Stranding

Upcoming 'intuitive open world' game from Kojima Productions. Possible release date of Q4 2018, but nothing confirmed yet.

It's also unclear what the gameplay will be like - is it some sort of action RPG, survival horror, or mishmash? I'm sure for a lot of people it won't really matter, and it's probably just easiest to call it a 'Kojima' game.

There's quite a history behind the development already - this colab between Kojima, Norman Reedus and Guilermo Del Toro stems from the fallout between Kojima and Konami, and that pretty incredible tech demo called P.T., aka Silent Hills.

For anyone curious,  the unusual name is a reference to the phenomenon of whales beaching themselves. Given the content of the footage below, it's probably safe to assume that the game deals with the end of the world as we know it - humanity beaching itself. Sounds very Kojima.

It also uses Guerrillas Decima engine, which was also used in Horizon Zero Dawn, so will look and feel great.

Extended 'trailer' from yesterday's games awards

I think the only phrase that does that justice is 'From the mind of Hideo Kojima' :D

Some thoughts on the trailer;

"um-hmm..

oh right, yea..

oh.. wait, hang on..

ohhhh, ok...

wait a minute..

oh..

Ooooohhhh..

oh, what the ****..

oh Kojima.. what the ****..

Oh ok..

ok...

ok?  Is this ok?

This is NOT ok

who thought of this??

no seriously, who thought of this?

.. I must buy this game.."

And then the video got to the bit where it said "Once there was an explosion" @0.21 seconds.

I have been sold on this game since it was announced and I am even more sold now. I just want to delve into this world and get lost in the mind of Hideo Kojima once more. Great trailer, great visuals, great acting, great intrigue.. Just great.

Sony's Mark Cerny has stated that the story amazingly starts to make sense 4-5 hours into the game from what he's played.

Now granted this figure could be influenced by all sorts of things. Kojima has already said that the game is a vast open world with lots of freedom of choice to go and do whatever you want. So this figure could be higher depending how fleshed out the open world is currently. For all we know the build Cerny has played is merely story missions in a sandbox which would get him to the meat of the content much faster. Very interesting though that there is actually sense to this currently undecipherable madness.

It's also neat that the game is actually playable. Last I heard Kojima Productions had currently only built 20% of the game so to have a playable 4-5+ hour section is very impressive so early on.

PS. The Kojima quote in full about the gameplay;

Quote

'I can’t really speak on (The Gameplay) right now but in a word, it’s an action game – an open world game, with a lot of freedom. You have a lot of freedom of choice to do what you want to do and you can get in vehicles and so on. If you are a fighter, there’s plenty of opportunity for that. If you’re not that type of player, there are other ways to play this game. I can’t really say much more, but it’s an open-world, action game that’s very intuitive to play. Once you get into the world and start to explore more, we’re hoping there’s something there you’ve never seen before."

I love that Kojima edited this to make it look like a walking simulator..

This is an open world action/horror game that you can play however you want, with vehicles, online elements and anything else yet Kojima frames Sam Porter Bridges as a glorified Dominos delivery guy, I love it.

I thought the trailer was good. It didn't show too much even though there is no risk of that. It's certainly a trailer to be deciphered and looked into scene by scene, it was a standard you can walk, you can climb, you have guns kind of trailer really.

Some will look at this trailer and be unimpressed, but I'm not sure Kojima is aiming this trailer at anyone that doesn't already know a little bit about the game.

Is that the dude from Walking Dead?

Right now the confirmed cast;

  • Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal, Casino Royale)
  • Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead)
  • Lea Seydoux (007 Spectre)
  • Lindsay Wagner (The Bionic Woman)
  • Guillermo del Toro (Pans Labyrinth, Pacific Rim)

There are also voice actors from gaming who will be sharing their likeness;

  • Troy Baker (The Last of Us, BioShock Infinite, Uncharted 4)
  • Emily O'Brien (Mordor: Shadow of War)

With more cast members to be revealed it's sounding like it will be a good mix of Hollywood talent and some of the best gaming voice acting talent. Hideo Kojima is definitely spending that blank cheque that Sony gave him well that's for sure.

i thought the "gameplay" bits looked stunning and absolutely huge, its a very very pretty looking game, no worries about the gunplay based on MGS, i already know i'll probably only understand 75% of whats going on but again based on MGS i dont think thats a problem, my only concern at the moment is what i will be shooting at, as cool as these things in the sky that cant be seen are i cant see them being the common baddies in the game, that flashy gadget on his back could be a brilliant tool in a survival horror game, its got "oh shit" moments written all over it

imagine if you have some sort of shoot out like the ok corral, kill a load of enemies, health below 50%, use up a load of ammo, you're buzzing...and then that light starts flashing...

I haven't heard an Apocalyptica track in years.

Also, yeah, someone gave Kojima all the money and no restraints and it's as completely nuts as you'd expect. There's a scene in this which looks like a clip from Battlefield One.

Did anyone actually 100% understand everything from MGS?

I was at maybe 80% I think

I understand 80-90% of the Metal Gear/Metal Gear Solid story, but as with anything convoluted my understanding tends to wane until I next play through the games. I don't think it's possible to understand 100% of the MG/MGS storyline though, because beyond a point it all comes down to interpretation.

As for the trailer.. I can't wait to go on another deep dive into a Kojima game with Death Stranding. This game looks phenomenal.

It's really, really, really weird to see Kojima talking at length and being animated. We've spent years just seeing stand there saying a sentence through a interpretor and then walk off waving. It's like a different person.

Also hilariously they got someone to subtitle the voiceover for the video, but they didn't get anyone to subtitle the in game dialogue. Bewildering.

Also, people are going to hate this. Literally the first gameplay shown is you organising your backpack to be balanced, being unbalanced makes you walk off kilter and saps stamina. And your shoes can break.

It's going to be a glorious, glorious cluster ****.
