The Game's Gone

Just a quick reminder that this week in 4 years the WC in Qatar starts.

Still the biggest "joke" to ever come out of FIFA, and that's saying something considering how corrupt FIFA has been and still is.

At least 1200 slave workers dead (likely much, much more) No gays allowed in the country and so much more. And that's not even going into football matters.

Oh, and did you know that the man to save FIFA from corruption, Gianni Infantino had his own personal tailor traveling with him during all times during the WC in Russia this summer.

All the PL clubs seem to be able to find the money to give Scudamore his gift - yet only 4 PL clubs (Everton, Liverpool, Chelsea, West Ham) pay all their stadium staff a Living Wage. <sigh>

This could go in any number of threads but this is as good as any.

Mega-rich PFA spent £9m on memorabilia but wouldn't pay £70k to Jlloyd Samuel's grieving widow

  • PFA's former financial arm was over £1m in the red when it went into liquidation
  • Company accounts show that PFA Financial Management Ltd went into liquidation in 2009 owing £1,012,601, with former players among them
  • Sportsmail has spoken to ex-players who lost their savings after receiving financial advice from their own union
  • One revealed he was left on brink of bankruptcy after losing close to £80,000
  • The PFA only paid £11,000 to Jlloyd Samuel's widow Emma after his tragic death

The PFA’s former financial arm was more than £1million in the red when it went into liquidation, having squandered the personal savings of some of its members, Sportsmail can reveal.

As the pressure intensified on under-fire PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor last night, this newspaper was contacted by former players who blame the union for almost ruining their lives with bad financial advice.

Company accounts show that PFA Financial Management Ltd went into liquidation in 2009 owing more than £1m to its creditors, with ex-players among them.

BANK NOU: BARCELONA BECOME FIRST SPORT TEAM IN HISTORY TO PAY AVERAGE £10M WAGES PER PLAYER

With football’s increasingly grotesque finances being thrust to the forefront recently, fans of spiralling excess will be no doubt enthused to learn that Barcelona have become the first sport team in the history of humankind to breach the £10million average wage mark.

The Global Sports Salary Survey, conducted by Sporting Intelligence, found that the average salary Barca pay their 23-man first team squad (before bonuses) is close to £10.5million – the average weekly wage being a shade over £200,000…

Up one third from the previous season, the Catalan club’s figures are spiked by, among other things, Lionel Messi signing a new contract worth in excess of £50million a year as well as the likes of Gerard Pique, Sergio Busquets and Samuel Umtiti all agreeing lucrative extensions of their own.

Real Madrid are the next football team on the list with their first-team squad pocketing an average of £8.1million a year.

The NBA then muscle in on the next six spots (Pies had honestly never heard of Oklahoma City Thunder until today) before Juventus and Manchester United arrive to fill out the rest of the Top 10.

Interestingly, Juve have leapt up from 32nd place on last year’s list almost entirely due to the arrival of one Cristiano Ronaldo.

For the record, Man City are down in 20th place, while Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool are all also nestled inside the Top 40.

Indeed, the Premier League as a whole is still the ‘richest’ league in world football, with players earning an average yearly wage of £2.99million – that’s some 36% more than in La Liga (£2.2million) in second.

All a bit mad, isn’t it?

The classic arena can be renamed

It has been called Camp Nou since 1957.

Now that era can be over.

Barcelona can rename the arena after a pharmaceutical company.

In 1957 FC Barcelona left Camp Les Corts and moved onto the newly built Campo Nou. Since then, the arena has been one of the football world's classics. Now, however, it is apparent that an intervention in the heart of the arena will soon be done: its name.

Camp Grifols?

Daily Mail quotes the Spanish radio station RAC1, which in turn reports that the club is in discussions with a company about a new arena name. It is unclear exactly what Camp Nou may be baptized into, but the counterparty that Barcelona is negotiating with is the Catalan pharmaceutical company Grifols.

Can give 2 billion

According to the radio channel, the parties can agree to 2019. Another potential company that may resort to the name rights is the local media company Mediapro, which also houses in Barcelona.

A possible deal would bring about $ 2 billion to Barcelona, which, according to the information, could invest in improvements to the stadium as well as a brand new indoor arena for Barcelona's basketball team, handball team and futsay team.

Can't see the fans allowing this to happen, but then again the money has to come from somewhere.

why does that make them a horrible club?!

Thats what FFP has brought to the table

Yeah, bit of a weird reaction.

Are all clubs that have naming rights on their stadium horrible?

i think the need for barca to sell the naming rights means its definitely in the right thread

the fact that its a catalonian company effectively looping money back in is what it is, previously they would have just pumped money direct in to the clubs coffers and no one battered an eye lid now they have to have their name plastered somewhere instead, its still better than having a nigerian drinks partner or japanese tractor engine partner

its just another example of how the "controlled" finances in modern football are actually a bit shit, barca sell it for £300m, city come along and renegotiate their deal at an artificially inflated by the owners £350m and that will be followed by the likes of utd claiming they are bigger than city and striking a £400m deal soon after
