Its all well and good looking at other teams strikers and being seduced by their past record....but we have to sign players to fit in to our system and style..

At present we haven't got the quality of midfielder to bring in or feed strikers that rely on the service of threaded balls or intricate passing and moving.

We have lacked pace and flair since the days of Young and Milner tearing up the wings and striking the shit of fear out of defenders.. Barry's through balls.

We need these type of player again and more fluency to our style of playing.

Again.. We have too much defensive mentality and like minded midfielders to dare try this! 

We certainly need to get shot of McCormack or Agbonlahor or even both and sign an attacking midfielder with the money/wages free'd up. They are both finished at this level of football.

Still leaves us with Hogan, Kodja,  Davis & Hepburn-Murphy. Which is more than enough in the strikers department.

If he sells Hogan then he needs to sign a decent replacement striker.

The way I see it, which may help vindicate @TRO's comments is this:

We've do have players with the passing ability to play clever through balls to a striker like Hogan or Musa, all the ones you've mentioned above @Grasshopper have that in their locker.  However what's stopping them in the main, is our inability as a team to create space!  The space to play the ball through and the space for strikers to run into.  The reasons why we don't IMO are:

1. As a team we don't play enough of an expansive, passing style of football which has the effect of drawing the opposition out-of-position and opening up gaps / pockets of space.  We're capable on occasion but teams like Wolves, Fulham (may be not so much recently), Reading etc do this througout every game - we're nowhere near that level of passing.

2. Weaker sides invariably set up to sit deep against us.  There's much less room for strikers to play in and as a result we've found joy in playing someone like Davis who can hold the ball up in tight spaces with his back to goal and allow the midfield to move up the pitch so we can create in numbers.

3. Against the stronger sides, where there is more space between the lines, we don't play 4-4-2.  Go back to point 1 and it tells you that to avoid being out passed we pack the midfield.  Even playing on the break, when it's one man up top you're easily marked out of the game - so again it's more effective to stick a big man up there to try and hold the ball.

Absolutely.

Then it‘s even more confusing that Bruce had Jedi as proof that an old hand with no legs and injury prone was not what we needed. However, he still bought Whelan (basically like for like) with minimal improvement.

Hence, numbers in MF instead of quality. Leaving us short (only 1 up top).

Now a manager of his experience should have known that. Taking this info into account, Bruce should have bought a Davis-type player instead of Hogan and a more mobile destroyer than Whelan.

We are now approaching a Jan window where we need a CB & LB just to do the same old. When we actually need a DM with passing skills, A CB as cover, a LB for cover and a CF (Davis like) for cover so that we can make use of the money spent on Hogan, Lansbury and Hourihane, plus the Snod & Onomah loans to come to fruition

He wouldn't come in to replace any of our DMs as he isn't as good defensively and his passing, statistically speaking, is nothing special either.

Well, it has nothing whatsoever to do with them, does it?....they only have a passing interest.

as one is injured, has a long term injury, he can be excused.

I think you're over estimating how many good through balls can played per game. Don't forget the opposition set out to stop this happening. We do have the players and now and then we deliver a cutting through ball for players to pick up and run on to.  But if the sole tactic is to put the striker one on one with the keeper that won't happen often enough to produce the required goals.

If you watch any compilation of goals in a good % of those the forward has work to do when he gets the ball.
