Scrappy win but it's a win and that's all that matters it's all about results this is a game that we would have dropped points in last year ,losing Taylor is a blow with no specialist cover at LB would imagine Hutton or De Laet would be front runners to slot in there would prefer them to Bjarnason

Worst performance I've seen from both the ref and Villa for a while. Good to get away with a win regardless.

A Kodija pass rather than egotistical finishing would've probably put this game at 2-0 which would be a fair result.

First of all I'm really really happy with the win. Was nervous about this game as I felt it was vital we get three points ahead of the break to keep us in the mix. Was a poor performance by us which wasn't helped by the fact Bolton had the ball in the air for the whole game. We struggled to break them down and looked sluggish all game. We couldn't get any momentum in our attacking play and continually played the ball sideways but behind the man receiving it. This continually stunted any progressive forward play and slowed everything down. We had decent passages of play at times but couldn't really muster up a sustained period of domination on our opponent. They made it difficult for us but we looked slow to receive the ball and would invite pressure on ourselves. That said, and despite U.S. Struggling to break Bolton down, we should've won more easily and had a couple of decent chances. Someone mentioned above this is the first game lately that we had more possession and that was probably why we were stifled in breaking down a stubborn opposition as they were happy to sit behind the ball. They posed little threat and our back line defended solidly. Thought Whelan was very poor first half and Hourihane struggled to get himself into the game. Kodjia, just before winning the pen should have easily put us one up by squaring the ball to Adomah for a simple tap in but his selfishness (which hasn't been apparent of late) took over and he decided he wanted the glory. Fair play for him winning the pen and tucking it away. Davis was out of the game today. We've kept the same team for the past four games and the confidence is there as is the familiarity of our players knowing where each other are. It's no coincidence this is the case when we stick to a side and a system that is working. Snodgrass really is a work horse for us, and reminds me of Milner through his positivity, his commitment and his work rate.

Chuffed with the win in what was a very difficult afternoon for us. Defended really well deep into injury time and saw it out. Am so so gutted losing Taylor for the next few games and two crucial derbies as it totally upsets our balance and forces us to change our personnel. Buggar. Looked rash and wasn't surprised at a red. Takes the shine off the win for me but hope RDL can fill in adequately. I don't expect much (anything) at Wolves away so it was imperative we got the win today so I'm pleased with that.

Hope we can march on after the break and become a sustainable force at the top end of the league.

Horror show from the referee who let the Bolton back four get away with it all afternoon. I was too far away to see the Taylor tackle but the referee could not get the red card out quick enough and probably shot his load as he did it. I just don't know how someone who is so biased / crap (delete as appropriate) referee at this level.

Bolton came for a point, which thankfully they did not get, and their tactics, if that is the right word, was to stifle us and hoof it up the pitch and foul as and when needed. I was disappointed that we could not break the down and to be honest it exposed our short comings for me.

Still it's three points so I will enjoy the win made that little sweeter by SHA shipping six goals. It was also good to listen to the unwashed neanderthals bleating about the Blues result on WM on the way home

Not even the red card, it was the constant fouls, the holding of arms, the pulling of shirts. Challenging for a ball, putting both arms around someone's neck is legal now, pinning their arms behind their backs, legal now. Having someone run past you, just put your arm across their face, it is legal now. If you have to cover ground to make a header, lead with your knees, that is legal too.

Even when the ref was 6 yards from play looking at the exact line of sight as me he didn't give some of these.

I have watched incompetent refs, more so the past year, but this was bordering on criminal, this was something else and I am genuinely wondering what this guy's beef with us was.

Staggering. I will still be thinking about that performance tonight and shaking my head.

Have to say the standard of refereeing I have seen so far in this league has been diabolical.  However today's ref was head and shoulders the worst I have seen.

He was utterly utterly woeful. Davis will probably be unable to walk the amount of abuse he took.

Our performance was unfortunately not what we were all hoping for, and will not win me back over to Bruce, I still spent most of the game anxious and worried.

However job done though we rode our luck a little at the end.

Wovles game is now huge.

I voted for a poor manager performance but that's probably just from the last 20 minutes of the game. We dominated and the game should have been put to bed early on, but we failed to take our chances and Bolton started to get back into it. Samba made a nice block late on, but I don't think he should have been on the pitch. Going to a back five wasn't needed and just made us drop deeper and invited the pressure.

I don't think I've seen a more panicky player on the ball than Whelan. Every time he gets the ball, he refuses to look forward and just boots it away under pressure, or passes back to the defenders. Jedinak is a better player but as we have seen, he doesn't really work in a midfield two. Hourihane was good, again, but I'd still like to see him further forward and getting shots off - he has one of the best long range shots in the country, so why don't we utilise it?

Davis, Adomah and Kodjia were all quiet but not particularly poor. MOTM was Snodgrass who is showing that he is a class act and is probably unfortunate not to be playing top level football still.
