As @chrisp65 says, Manchester is constantly bigging itself up and every Manc you meet won't stop talking about how great their city is. I sit opposite one at work, cracking lad, but its Manchester this, Manchester that, best music in the word etc. Whereas us Brummies generally just play the city down and aren't one for boasting.

Now I like Manchester, but its nothing special and certainly no better than Brum.

A really good example recently of this is Manchester Airport creating a popup store in Birmingham City Centre.

That is really taking the piss.

What is even more maddening is that if anyone, anyone did anything that could be construed as taking away Manchester's civic pride there would be uproar.

Why are they so bloody arrogant? It's ridiculous.

How is it taking the piss? Seriously, do you expect a company based in Manchester not to want to try and attract business from Birmingham? That's a very naive view, it's not how business works.

I'd also suspect that for a lot of people North of the city at least MAN is a serious proposition compared to BHX, timewise. The Airport is definitely better in terms of destinations offered

Though I'm not sure why airports need to actually advertise. The destination and airline are usually far bigger influencers on the decision than which airport to fly from. It's rare to actually have a choice, if you do have a choice you'll generally go to the closest to home unless you have a problem with the particular airline (like I do with Flybe)

Of course they want to drum up business. That's how it works. What I don't like is that it's hypocritical, because if Birmingham did the same back then it would be a PR nightmare as the press and local Government would kick up a stink about it.

Why would they? Sorry but that's just nonsense. There are thousands of businesses based in Brum or Manchester doing business with each other every single day, what makes this any different? There is no hypocrisy involved here. It really is just business

Presumably they are paying for this? Not exactly a free lunch.

I do agree that it is just business, but to me there is more to it because of the images of the cities are involved, given that it's the airport of one. It's one business that can be seen to culturally represent the entire city by it's nature. I know you won't agree, but as a result I see that as poor for the image of Birmingham, that it's main competitor can set up shop where I believe the reverse would not happen.

So let me get this right. You can't open a shop here because you ain't from round here?

Thats one very dark alley you're heading down.

see unfortunately MAN is a damn sight bigger than BHX. It's a truly International Global Airport, you can fly to all corners of the world from there on a daily basis. It's kinda like the LHR of the north of England. It's not opened a pop up shop to compete with BHX, it's there (IMO) trying to take trade away from LHR. The distance between the two being pretty similar. BHX is a regional airport, it's a good tier down. Just like JLA here in Liverpool is. The country doesn't need another airport that size in the Midlands just yet. That's why BHX won't and don't need to reciprocate.

They won't be there to convince you to fly to Alicante from Manchester rather than brum...round the world from Manchester rather than Heathrow though...at a guess part of the shop will be plugging the swanky new lounge Manchester have just opened there

anyway without wanting to go too far OT I'd have thought there'd be more talk over brum vs Liverpool for the commonwealth games, Manchester are getting involved with that too I think letting them use the velodrome

The two regions new mayors are best mates, so that goes a long way towards the co-operation.

Between Brum and Liverpool for the CG, I'd expect Liverpool to win. As much as I despise the current Labour administration in Liverpool, I've always given them credit for organising bids for events like this. The council really do pull in some great events, every summer. It's a tourist Mecca these days, rarely is there a weekend without a big event in the summer months... what does Brum do?

And as much as I hate to say it... The Beatles. They'll trump anything Brum has to offer. The anniversary of the greatest album ever *spits* events this summer have pulled people in from all over the world. Shakespeare Country down the road just doesn't compare.

When it comes to stuff like this... The Liverpool Culture Company really is top notch

bah channel 4, seriously, who cares, I doubt Liverpool does. Apart from the news it's a dreadful channel

I am approaching this from a global city image/reputation, surely you can see that? Brummies of the future can't moan about Manchester being the 2nd city if there's no reaction to things like this. Business is business, and if what they're doing is successful and generates a interest then I personally think Birmingham is not doing enough for itself to make something like what MAN did a poor business decision.

And the second part of what would happen if visibly Birmingham-based business set up shop in Manchester's back garden is totally a hunch. There's nothing more to it than that. But c'mon, you know it would get laughed out of court.

Nah, that's not true

In economic terms it employs about 700 people who are mainly all specialists in whatever they do and would move with the company. The rest are freelancers and work all over the country on whatever programme they are working on. It's not going to create much additional work for whichever city gets it. There is no kudos to having channel 4, like I said the only programme it does with any reputation is the news.

How many millions do you think BHX should waste in trying to catch up with MAN just to satisfy some reputation issue? They would need to open new terminals, and additional runway etc. BHX have in fact got rid of a runway, merged two terminals into one and dropped the International from its name. It knows it's place. It's the 7th busiest airport in Britain, that's about right given its geography.

My Mrs parents were astonished walking around Birmingham. Everyone still thinks it's a 1960s concrete jungle, and the place has changed so much.

This city needs to get it's arse in gear and start acting like the second city it is.

350,000 people a second city does not make. 1.2 million does.

Most people in Birmingham don't realise how nice Birmingham is now, let alone people not from here.
