Aston Villa is delighted to announce the signing of John Terry on a one-year deal.

The former England captain arrives at Villa Park having helped Chelsea secure the Premier League title in 2016/17 and left Stamford Bridge at the expiration of his contract.

Terry enjoyed a stellar career with the Blues, winning four Premier League titles, five FA Cups, three League Cups as well as the Champions League and Europa League.

After making his debut in 1998, the 36-year-old went on to record 713 appearances for Chelsea and skippered the London side on 578 occasions.

PFA Player of the Year award winner in 2005, Terry also won 78 caps for England and represented his country at the World Cup and at the European Championships.

He said: “I am delighted to join Aston Villa.

“It’s a club I have admired from afar for many years – there are fantastic facilities at Bodymoor Heath, Villa Park is one of the finest stadiums in the country and there’s a good group of players here, with an experienced and successful manager in Steve Bruce.

“I can’t wait to get started now and look to help the squad achieve something special this season.”

Welcome JT!

And to be honest, I don't even think that "admired from afar" quote is a rhetorical placating of the fans.  Even in their pomp, Chelsea had a fair old time trying to beat us, so it would be of no surprise for him to have a grudging professional respect for us over the years.

Big news, big signing, obviously not the player he once was, but everything else about this is good for the club, morale and our profile/intent. We already have a great squad, Brucie just needs to be free from injuries and get them playing as a team.

John Terry's move to Aston Villa will polarise opinion across English football but this is a huge triumph for Steve Bruce and promises to be the defining moment of his reign.

Terry has opted to extend his playing career in the muck and nettles of the Championship, turning down far more lucrative offers from around the world, to secure a significant pre-season boost for Bruce. It could, and should, prove a masterstroke for Villa, with Terry's leadership qualities and enduring ability sorely needed in a dressing room that still contains players who wilt in front of the gargantuan Holte End. After so little football at Chelsea last season Terry will arguably have a point to prove and has the added incentive of targeting something he has never achieved before in his glittering career - promotion to the Premier League.

This is a player who has won five league titles, the Champions League and five FA Cups, one of the most high-profile figures in the modern era, who will now be operating in far humbler surroundings such as Burton Albion's Pirelli Stadium.

He could easily have chosen the retirement route but the fact he has decided to play on should be seen as a positive, a sign that he still possesses the hunger to compete.

All the bonuses and incentives loaded into his one-year contract will be worth it if Terry can help lead Villa back to the big time, after the west Midlanders' difficult year adapting to the second tier. Bruce and the Villa hierarchy deserve huge credit for getting this deal over the line, a reward for persistence and a transfer that ensures further scrutiny will be on this famous old club this season. For Bruce, it is undoubtedly a deal that could make or break him as Villa manager.

He admitted towards the fag end of the last campaign that he would be added to the litany of recent managerial failures if he struggled in his first full season. He cannot afford a poor start, with the detractors growing in number in the final months of the season, and desperately needs to hit the ground running. Terry will be as crucial off the field as on it, a mentor to the likes of Jack Grealish and Andre Green, despite the obvious noise around his past misdemeanours at Chelsea.

Villa's fans appear to be delighted with the news, with the added Brucey bonus of beating their bitter rivals Birmingham to his signature.

It should be a genius move and Villa, under threat of breaching Financial Fair Play rules, have pushed the boat out to lure him.

Yet after wooing the 36-year-old on the lush golf courses of the Algarve, Bruce - and Villa - could finally be out of the rough and focusing on a brighter future.

Captain. Leader. Legend... Adopted Brummie.
