They reached the champions league quarter finals two years later. I take your point about smaller teams having good runs, same in the europa league when you look at it e.g. Dnipro getting to the final three years ago. If the money stopped, it'd change - but football fans love football, even whilst acknowledging how shit "the system" is. Which is why they should skip the group phase too and just name the teams they wish to be in the round of 16.
