Champions League allocations

If I'm not mistaken, there's a very interesting race brewing in the league co-efficients at the moment.

The Premier League in 3rd place is currently beating the Serie A by 75.391 points to 72.832.

That's a cumulative co-efficient over this season and the previous 4 (this season 5 is still going on)

But ...

For next season's tally they will both lose their 2012/13 score (13/14, 14/15, 15/16, 16/17, 17/18).
That means England loses a 16.428 and Italy only loses a 14.416.

All of a sudden the new totals would read 58.963 versus 58.416 with the new season to add on.

So if Italy can out-perform the Premier League in Europe next season by over half a point, then the following season they would get the 4th Champions League slot and England drops to 3.

Chortle.

It's also worth remembering that both leagues still have someone in Europe this season, so their current 2016/17 scores of 14.357 for England and 13.750 for Italy could still change.

For comparison, Spain are top with 104.141 and Germany are second on 79.498.

Is this still the case @BOF ?

Having read this thread, I did a quick search and I'm seeing a few articles suggesting the top four leagues will get four teams each, due to a change in the co-efficient rule. So the English, Spanish, German and Italian leagues will be riding the gravy train for a while yet.

The way I'm reading it, it looks like Ligue 1 would have to overtake the Premier League, which I can't imagine is going to happen anytime soon.

I dearly hope you're right and I'm wrong though.

If they're moving the goalposts then I may be wrong. I'm working off the current allocation where Italy has 3 and England is the lowest ranked with 4. Wouldn't surprise me if they're protecting the establishment by sorting it out before it becomes an issue.

From the BBC last year...

Europe's top four domestic leagues are to be guaranteed four places each in the group stages of the Champions League from the 2018-19 season.

I have no memory of this, but then I suppose champions league qualification hasn't been at the forefront of my mind lately.

I never quite understood why if you get eliminated from champions league you get a second chance in the europa? its actually pathetic. give more league placings for countries than have champions league rejects coming in

bring back uefa cup where it was straight knock outs and you could draw whoever without this seeding rubbish

It might be that I’m looking through rose tinted specs here, but I remember all three European tournaments being highly regarded and co existing perfectly fine. Obviously the European Cup/Champions League was the big one, but the other two were highly thought of too.

That's because winning football matches and trophies was what created the esteem rather than revenue

They can chop and change the format of both competitions as much as they like but if the end result is still the CL winners get £100m and the EL winner has to rely on flying to eastern Europe using wizz air in order to break even then it's a waste of time, and that's before you get to the disparity the CL creates in the various l3ague competitions

From memory the CWC had lost some of it's luster towards the end and teams from the bigger countries were played 2nd string players. I think in part because the big teams that were involved were concentrating on the league to get into the newly formed CL (more money on offer.) Also a knock out competition doesn't offer UEFA the chance to make $$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I agree with you now though that a straight ahead European knock out cup would be fantastic. All these leagues with endless games against unheard of Eastern European teams is an absolute snoozefest. FIFA & UEFA are run by cockwombles.

CWC was fun as usually had random teams in it and not the regular top teams

Last three winners of CWC were Barca 97, Chelsea 98 and Lazio 99.

In the 90s yes CL was the main tournament but it wasn't a disaster if you weren't in it and you had a good spread of teams across the three competitions.

Uefa cup 98 when we made the quarters we beat Bilbao in second round who finished second that season in La Liga. Inter Milan won it that season with Ronaldo upfront so you had the best striker in the world back then not even playing CL football.

After CWC got disbanded the Uefa/Europa became too bloated and too long a tournament so that's when it got devalued and champions league was percieved at least by English clubs as the only european competition to bother with.
