Promotion 2017/18: What does it require?

Not a thread for transfer speculation (player recommendations welcomed) but more geared towards what necessary improvements are required to gain promotion next season.

A few things from me:

  • Goals from midfield and a second goal threat other than Kodjia - we have lacked goals for years now and it's one of the main reasons we are where we are!
  • Quality not quantity in the transfer window - that's enough rebuilding, let's add difference makers that can get the job done week in week out.
  • Seeing teams off early - we've scored 3 goals in a game only twice this season (by my reckoning against Rotherham & Cardiff).

I'd say a completely different mindset from manager (and players) when it comes to tactics and approaching the games is vital.

Enough with the cautious, reactive, defensive, deep sitting, slow, immobile, nervous, disjointed, stretched out crap I've seen this season.

If we are to finish near the top of the table we must have more focus on trying to win rather than trying to not lose.

Completely agree mate, we should be going into every game aiming to win, enough of the cautious approach. We signed 2 of the best attack minded midfielders in the league in January and they do not have the freedom to go forward, we also signed one of the top scorers, at the time, and have not created any significant chances for him.

Everyone that puts on a villa shirt needs to give 100% come match day and realise that we are Aston Villa, we are one of the "big clubs" in this country and we deserve more than what they have offered thus far.

The final point I will make is that we need to stop relying on individuals. It is not just on Kodjia and jedinak. Most of the players at our disposal have what it takes to make an impact on games yet they rarely show it. More passion and consistency is needed from all.

Ability to pass the ball

Ability to keep possession

Ability to dominate matches

Take our chances when we are dominating matches

Midfielders to score goals

Win double figure away matches

Not throw away leads

Score about 20 more goals

If we do the above we should go up or at least the playoffs

What we really need is some impatient and unrealistic demands to have a manger, probably foreign because that is better, who storms their way to promotion playing 'attractive' football with at least 70% possession every game.

Not sure if that's what we really need. Those demands this season didn't help us in any way.

But yes, demanding to have a manger (foreign or not) is indeed unrealistic. (Insert your own "Feed the ***** and he will score" or "Away with the manager" jokes here)

A small number of additions in the summer, get rid of the deadwood, a good pre-season, and whatever it takes to get the midfield and attack more in sync.

Promotion away form instead of relegation away form. Requires one hell of a transformation.

For us to appear seemingly less accepting of defeats. We know we're going to lose games, Newcastle have lost around ten this season, but recovering quickly from setbacks is paramount.

If we lose at Preston one week, we need to make damn well sure that we win at Blackburn say the next game on the road.

We need to stop using Alan Hutton as our playmaker.

We need to push everyone up at least 5 yards.

Our wingers need to get involved more.

Our midfielders need to play quicker passes to players in a villa shirt, would help if they were further up the pitch.

We need a keeper who can save shots that aren't just straight at him.

All in all a new manager who actually knows how to resolve these issues.

A new manager who will build a squad based on how he wants the team to play and how they will fit in.

Not players who's stats look good for their current team and arrogantly throwing our weight around to sign them.

I'm going to avoid saying the obvious as there's plenty on that already. What we do need however is a ringer!

A what you say? A Shelvey, a Knockaert. The two top promoted clubs went up because of these two players. A player who of this standard. Premier League ilk but playing for us.

What we got this season were loads of 'decent' Championship players. Find a ringer, pay him well. The single most effective thing we can do.

One decent player is better than 5 average players. Scout the top leagues for him. Do it now.
