Wont worry about him coming on for our starting CB.. Nor Baker. Great to have. When Baker was out and i saw Elphick or RIchards coming on last season.. my confidence was dented.. im sure thats how the players felt.

Chester and Terry should be our starting CBs, but I actually look forward to seeing Samba in the line up occasionally.

I really like Baker, but he is going to lose out here because Samba should be the automatic back up.

When was the last time we had such strong options at centre back (in relative terms)?

Interesting

I think Samba will play more of a part than we think.

last season  Bartley & Jansson were formidable along with capable full backs......formed their back bone.

see us forming a similar line up too.

Makes sense bringing him on if we are chasing the game. He wins a great deal in the air, something we didn't do for 55 minutes of today's game.

We had a couple corners 10 minutes or so before the end, that would have been the time to bring him on.

Midfield was lost after 35 minutes so playing more direct with 5 minutes to go probably looked a better option than trying to win back the midfield.

However the midfield issue should have been sorted at half time !

Not his fault, and he didn't particularly do anything right / wrong, but that was somewhere between hilarious and embarrassing. It's the first game of the season...yes, we have some injuries, but is that really what we resort to already...it's a pretty stark admission of a lack of decent ideas / options!

Just can't believe that this is what we resorted to first game of the season.

We took a £10 million striker off the pitch and then later out a CB up front.

That's what we did.

Fair play to samba, he put the effort in but I'm stunned at what I saw today.

It was the 90th min for ffs! It's not like it was his only idea.

He brought green on. Missed a sitter. Brought onnuha on missed a sitter.

Last chance sallon throw the big guy on to unsettle their cb and try and nick it.

I dont get the shock over this. It was for 4 mins. Have a day off

I really don't understand why Bruce thought a centerback would be more effective than an actual striker. Plus Gabby looked dead after 60 minutes. Hogan was actually still running around and chasing defenders. I was absolutely shocked Samba came on for Hogan. Fair play to Samba though. He ran like mad.

Why not have Davis on the bench for a late game sub? Surely he is a better option.

Samba came on for Lansbury. Bruce brought Onomah on for Hogan.

Agreed it was all a bit baffling though.

Can someone explain why he took hogan off not gabby???

ridiculous sub. He should have taken gabby off and played onomah there.

Gabby scored (luxury for Villa) - Hogan did his (in Villa shirt) usual nothing.

I don't care how long it was for.

That was the level of desperation we reached today and that was the answer.
