It is certainly a world away from managing the likes of Huddersfield and Reading. Wagner has worked under the pressure of being with Dortmund (albeit as an assistant) Stam has worked at Ajax again not as manager but I think the pressure of following in the footsteps of greats and the expectations associated with working at such a historical prestigious clubs would stand hopefully stand them in good stead to cope with the demands. But your right you can find examples to suit either argument and every manager choice is a lottery.

I am sure if I looked I could find quotes from Di Matteo stating what his footballing philosophy was/is and I am sure there are loads of unsuccessful managers that have talked about having a footballing philosophy and many successful ones that never mentioned it. Wagner and Stam have done terrific with their clubs so far this season. Wagner has been at Huddersfield for around 18 months and Huddersfield finished 19th last season. On top of two thirds of a season last season he then had a full pre season. Stam took over at Reading in June and again had a full pre season. Had they have taken over their respective clubs part way through the season they may not have done so well this season. In fact Wagner did take over a club part way through last season and hardly set them alight. No doubt as things stand today though they look very promising young managers doing exceptionally well at relatively small clubs, certainly in comparison to us. Coyle, Jewel, Martinez were also bright young things years ago who did fantastic jobs at smaller clubs. You can perhaps throw Lambert into that pot as well. Personally I think for the job we have here, the huge pressure and expectation that comes with managing our club I am not sure a Stam or a Wagner could handle that pressure at this time in their careers. It is certainly a world away from managing the likes of Huddersfield and Reading. What huge pressure? We need to get over ourselves. The great Villa this, the great Villa that... We are a tinpot championship club. That is the starting point. The past is a warm blanket, like the one children and old sick people cling to. We are huge opportunity with massive resources relative to our peer competitors. This is a dream job. The fact we are where we are given the money spent is directly attributable to the managerial incompetence displayed this season, which is unfortunately ongoing.

Demitri_C
Warner for me could be another lambert. In fact lambert achieved more than Warner has when we approached him. Would rather stick with proven bruce

The past makes a difference. If it didn't, we'd be a happier lot than Burton fans at the moment, because we're above them. Why wouldn't we be, the fact we've been a Premier League side for 25 years and that they've been lower leagues means nothing, right? That's why there's more pressure, because the past does matter, there's far more of a demand to go up and not be an also ran in this league. Then, as you mentioned, finances. We spend, therefore we expect. When you are on a small budget, you can't go wrong most of the time. Spend £500k on someone who turns out poor? Well he only cost £500k. If he turns out good? Well done, great job. Spend £10m on a dud and you get slaughtered, if he turns out great? So he should, big money, just playing to expectation. The idea that this club has too much pressure being about arrogance or ego is completely misplaced. It's about the fact that pressure goes with it. The same to a higher level with United. Just because they've not been in the CL for a few years doesn't mean that there isn't massive pressure because of the club history and money spent, that's part of football. The same can be said of playing staff. Barnsley were a favourite to be at the bottom end, their players played with freedom. Suddenly Hourihane and Winnall are at clubs with more expectation and that pressure is far harder to deal with. Suddenly having a few good games isn't considered good, it's the minimum expected. You can dismiss pressure. But it absolutely exists. More so here than at most clubs at this level.
