Popular Post NurembergVillan Posted December 2, 2016 Moderator Popular Post Share Posted December 2, 2016 I'm starting a day late here, but kicked this off on Twitter yesterday. Every day I'll choose a favourite player with the squad number who matches that date. Not looking forward to numbers 5 and 10, as they're simple choices but mean leaving out a couple of my other favourites. Anyway, window number 1 had to be - Honourable mentions also to David James and Brad Friedel. Keep an eye out for more goalkeepers in the later numbers! Dishonourable mention for Peter Enckelman.
Popular Post NurembergVillan Posted December 2, 2016 Author Moderator Popular Post Share Posted December 2, 2016 Today is window number 2, and it was a fairly tough one. We've not had a great list of right backs in recent years, but in the 90s and mid-00s we had some good players on that flank. Despite a strong case from Earl Barrett, today for me had to be - Today's honourable mentions are Earl Barrett and Gary Charles. Dishonourable mention for Tiago Ilori.

Popular Post NurembergVillan Posted December 3, 2016 Author Moderator Popular Post Share Posted December 3, 2016 It's a good shout Mike, but I decided to restrict myself to squad number era only. Otherwise I'd have run out at day 14! Today's window is a personal favourite of mine. As Villa fans we seem to have a natural affinity to strikers and central defenders, those being positions where we've had the most talent. For cult heroes though, it's hard to see past one of the sweatiest players to wear the shirt. A man who never gave in, would sweat blood for the badge, and sadly succumbed to that awful injury. Your advent number 3 is Freddie Bouma - Honourable mentions to Steve Staunton and Alan Wright. Dishonourable mention to Joe Bennett, who was always willing but just couldn't live up to his predecessors in the number 3 shirt.

Popular Post NurembergVillan Posted December 4, 2016 Author Moderator Popular Post Share Posted December 4, 2016 Who's behind window number 4? It's a no-brainer, and not. Seems we've got quite the legacy of number 4s over the years, and there was a surprising amount of competition for this one. There's no surprise with who I've gone for though. Beyond a cult hero - a genuine hero. For a few years he was the heartbeat of Aston Villa, a lion in claret and blue. Ladies and gentlemen, all rise - Honourable mentions for Shaun Teale and Gareth Southgate, and a golf clap for Ron Vlaar. Dishonourable mentions for Steve Sidwell and Micah Richards, both of whom arrived with great expectations and couldn't live up to the legends who wore the four before.
Rodders
All hail King Olaf. What a star. The great beard edges out the great Tache. Southgate had no chance.
Popular Post NurembergVillan Posted December 5, 2016 Author Moderator Popular Post Share Posted December 5, 2016 Bit late today, busy day at work. So, window 5. No real surprises here. Apologies to Martin Laursen... Most other clubs this would've been you. Similar for Ugo Ehiogu too. But, ladies and gentlemen, please be upstanding for the only number 5 any club could ever wish for -

Morley_crosses_to_Withe
He's probably the legend of Aston Villa legends. The greatest player to ever wear our shirt. So what I can never understand is why His thread is situated in Other Football
NurembergVillan Posted December 6, 2016 Author Moderator Share Posted December 6, 2016 Onto the midfield for day 6, and this is a shirt that's seen some tough tackling hard men and some silky skilled ball players too. Gareth Barry was a great combination of both these attributes, but he was also someone who had a few different squad numbers. For me, there was a number 6 who came in and proved to be a great all round midfielder and a great captain, and doesn't get the recognition he deserves. Number 6 - Honourable mentions for Andy Townsend, George Boateng and Gareth Barry (stay tuned for more from him). Dishonourable mention for Stewart Downing (booooooooo!).
Popular Post NurembergVillan Posted December 7, 2016 Author Moderator Popular Post Share Posted December 7, 2016 Day 7. Easy. Every time he pulled on the shirt, so did each and every one of us. One boy's Christmas wish that came true... Honourable mentions - Ray Houghton, Ashley Young Dishonourable mentions - Stephen Ireland, Ashley Young Misty-eyed regret - Lee Hendrie
