turnbull
As one of the few peeps on here who have actually seen England win a World Cup, it's quite a relief that we've finally reached another final. Can't knock GS for his achievement, it ain't to be sniffed at.

If we win would he be the most successful? Its such a young squad anyway, this is just the start of a dynasty. We go into the world cup as one of the favourites. Ingram85
Is it not possible to appreciate getting to the final and dislike Gareth at the same time? Because I don’t like him but I appreciate England getting to the final. It’s not one or the other. I don’t like Ibrahimovic, he’s a word removed but he’s a fantastic footballer. If he’s successful that means I can’t think he’s a clearing?

In 2018 they lost to Belgium strategically as they would have went into the nightmare side of the draw. I think the gap between the big nations and mid tier nations is getting closer. Portugal and Croatia now England have got to recent finals so its not like it was for years previous Pre Tournament everyone was debating whether we should lose a game as it was perceived that the group runner up would go into the better half of the draw. Yet we’ve topped the group and beaten everyone we’ve faced. I actually think teams will fear facing England

Only major teams on that side should have been Spain and Netherlands. Spain were the only decent team of the 3, I think Denmark fully fit give England a better game than 2 of them 3

This year I think France was so clearly the best team that once they got knocked out it was wide open. Luck plays a massive part in international football and Southgate has been very lucky so far. I hope his luck holds and we win it! I still wouldn't want him anywhere near managing Villa mind.

Yeah I think a lot of big name countries plus Belgium are always hyped before tournaments just because of the history and the player names. England have 1 or 2 big name superstars and Italy probably the same but not as many as other teams but they are both actually teams not relying on individual skills.
Popular Post lapal_fan
The managers since I've been alive (87) are; Bobby Robson - best finish - Semi Final, losing against Germany Graham Taylor - Exited the 1992 group stage, failed to get to WC 94 Terry Venables - Euro 96 semi, losing to Germany Glenn Hoddle - Last 16 WC 98, losing to Argentina Kevin Keegan - Euro 2000 group stage Sven - 2 WC quarter finals (losing to Brazil and Portugal), 1 Euro quarter final (losing to Portugal) McClaren - failed to get to Euro 08 Fabio Capello - WC2010 last 16, losing against Germany 4-1 Roy Hodgson - Euro 2012 quarter final (losing to Italy on pens), WC2014 group stage (finished bottom of Uruguay/Costa Rica & Italy), Euro 2016 Last 16 (losing to Iceland) Big Sam - yep. I'll take Southgate's achievements over any of them, bar maybe Bobby Robson who I think would have gone on to win the WC had we beaten Germany. We've had really strong teams previously, with stars all over the pitch and continually failed to do anything. Southgate has one of the youngest groups, he's worked with the majority of them for years and he knows their strengths and weaknesses. He doesn't "let them off the leash" like Sven did, relying on better individuals to do something (usually Becks/Owen) he has a system which so far has worked very well. It's not the most entertaining system, it's not the most exciting system, but we don't have the calibre of players in the middle to let Jack/Foden/Kane do what they want. If we had a Makelele or a Kante, alongside a Zidane, I'm sure we'd play it differently. But what he's done, is get a group of players who want to play for England (which is one thing from previous experience), who are happy to play in a specific role, they know their jobs and we're beating the teams we're playing against. We're in our first final since 66, we've actually played some decent stuff at times and I don't see what the moaning is about - even if he doesn't start Jack. It's obvious to me from this tournament, if we need a goal Jack is the first person on that pitch. I think the decision on Wednesday was down to Foden/Jack when Denmark went 4-2-4 and we've heard Southgate say previously he values big match experience (such as Foden in the CL final), that's probably what kept him on the pitch over Jack - not that Jack seemingly cares much about it. I don't understand why some are not excited. I'd rather have an intelligent person like Southgate, than a chancer like Big Sam or (shudder) Harry Redknapp when there was clamour for him 5 years ago. 10
It's Your Round
That’s pretty much where I’m at now @lapal_fan. We’ve got to appreciate the good times when we’ve got them, it might not happen again for another 55 years. We can wait until Villa are back for the scintillating football.
