OutByEaster? Posted November 19, 2016 Moderator Share Posted November 19, 2016 This coming Monday, Villatalk has been invited to a supporters group meeting with Steve Round, Technical Director. If there are any questions you'd like asked to him about his role, the direction he wants to take Villa in, what he's done so far, his feelings on managers or just about anything you can think of that might be of interest, please let us know in this thread. Popular Post sidcow Posted November 19, 2016 VT Supporter Popular Post Share Posted November 19, 2016 I posted this a while ago : There is a lot about modern football analysis that worries me. I saw somewhere that players crowd round the notice board to see their passing accuracy stats. To me that will encourage them to make easy safe passes and avoid adventurous creative but therefore risky passes. They wear these harnesses to track how far they run so I would think they would run around more even when not necessary wasting energy and potentially moving from where they really should/need to be. If you have to analyze possession the only meaning full stat would be possession in the furthest forward third of the pitch team v team. Football is not a game that can be meaningfully measured statistically. The great things which sway games are indefinable, moments of skill, hard work, pressing, pressure, opportunities taken or ignored. My guess is most of the players generally regarded as the best ever would fall down by a lot of the analysis that goes on. They are often mavericks and unconventional and these systems are there to shut that down. Most of us will see it in our jobs daily. I bet if most people were asked what made someone outstandingly good at whatever their profession was none of the answers would be something which is measured by the box ticking compliance flag systems they work within. I would like to know how they encourage and nurture talent, vision, creativity ability and risk taking and do these measurements get in the way of and discourage that. Cheers
S-Platt Posted November 19, 2016 VT Supporter Share Posted November 19, 2016 I would ask if the plan is to get all age groups playing the same way the first team does. Makes intergration into the first team when it happens easier. Also they backroom staff all going when a new manager comes in must cost a fortune if we interview for the managers position why not for all others? Why not try and get the best people for each position. Manager can choose his assistant but the backroom staff should have continuity and be a club decision.

First bit I think is really interesting - especially since I think it's Round's job not just to decide if they all play the same way, but also to decide what that playing style is. The second bit makes perfect sense - we go to long lengths to find a manager that the Technical Director can work with, but I wonder how much influence Round has on the staff that then come in to work with him, or whether the manager just picks his own stage based on experience and relationships. It's odd, but personally speaking, I think the job of Technical Director is a little bit mysterious, to me at least, possibly to a lot of us. Demitri_C
Can you ask round if there is a plan in place should we not get promoted this season? Just sceptical of another Lerner type situation where we suffer with drastic cuts

Popular Post HanoiVillan
Here are some questions: 1) Could you explain your role? What are the tasks you take responsibility for? What targets have been set for you, or have you set yourself, and how can the average fan judge your performance? 2) Are there any areas in which there is a risk of overlap between your role and that of the manager, or of the youth team coach? How do you plan to avoid clashes like that? 3) When you were appointed, there was some talk that the idea would be to make every part of the Villa set up play in the same way. Could you describe that style of football? What steps have the club taken to begin this process? 3.5) Managers don't last long in football. Is the idea of getting every part of the club playing in the same style manager-dependent? IE, do we now want all parts of the club to play the 'Steve Bruce way' but potentially change in case of a managerial change, or do we want to keep a consistent style of play regardless of who the manager is? If the latter, how do you intend to achieve that, and how do you intend to avoid the fate of say, WBA, who used to consider themselves purveyors of attacking football and then appointed a very defensive-minded manager? 4) The club was invited to join the Checkatrade Trophy but declined. While the competition can hardly be considered a success, greeted by apathy and poor crowds, there are some who might argue that our youth players would benefit from more competitive games. Do you feel the club made the right decision? 5) How would you rate our current youth prospects compared to those at previous clubs you have been involved in? 6) Villa have spent a large sum of money on buying players and paying off staff, and are now reported to be bumping into the FFP ceiling. Is there going to be any money to spend in January, and is there anything you can say more broadly about the clubs transfer strategy?

dont_do_it_doug.
To echo some of the posts above, I'd love to ask him loads of insightful questions but in truth, I don't really know what he does. So a clear and concise description of his job role would be awesome.
