Being kept in after the game

Quote

West Midlands Police have revealed that Aston Villa fans will be held in the ground after the second city derby with Birmingham City at the weekend.

The police have revealed the measures they will take in a bid to ensure the safety of all fans at the game on Sunday.

There will be a high police presence in place in and around the ground for the first league fixture between the two teams in over five years.

Match commander Chief Inspector Nick Rowe said: “It will be great to see two sets of passionate fans come along and enjoy the spectacle - and atmosphere - of a local derby.

“This is a great occasion and our role is to ensure a safe event for everyone who attends the game."

This is a ridiculous idea in my opinion. I'd like to know which fan groups they've spoken to? Have they ever been to that shit hole before? When they've done this in the past, all it's done is give time for them to hang about up the road, and pick off ones and twos, once the police escort has gone. If the idea is to stop trouble, then the best thing they could do is let everyone out at the same time. The majority of normal fans will just mingle into the crowd, and make their own way home as usual. It's not hard to do. Just make sure you're not in colours, and you'll be fine.

I remember this happening on my one and only trip to the sty (we won of course). They kept us in afterwards, and then by the time we were allowed to be taken back to town the home fans were waiting on the opposite side of the road with bricks and stones to throw at us, was a wonderful walk home. Good luck to those going.

They used to do this to us at Highfield Road in the 80's, made us targets then and will do again.

They used to do it almost everywhere in the late 70s and early 80s. I don't think it really changed much until about the time all seater grounds came in and Sky invented football.

I was there when we were kept in for an hour after, walking back to the car at millennium point and having to walk under that bridge past the pub on the island is one I won't forget

As long as it doesn't kick off round the ground police don't give a monkeys

Just don't go in colours then you be fine

The problem is, you're now identifiable even without colours - you're people coming out of the ground an hour after everyone else.

I'm not sure it's the right decision. Horrible ground, horrible people, horrible place to have to go, good luck to those of you that will be there.

Was locked in a while back and it was an absolutely horrendous idea. Bricks, bottles and glasses raining in while we were penned in. We were then marched back to the centre when we were just a massive walking target, bricks and bottles hitting people left right and centre. With the police taking no action.

let people filter out and you avoid the massive "villa fans are all here guys" target.

I went there in about 84/85 when I was young age 14/15 and very innocent about what it was like.

I got separated from my mates,  the highly aggressive police kept us in for a while then let us out. I remember being a young kid on my own walking down past The Watering Hole when some monster bloke with a neck like a bull covered in tattoo's (in the days before anyone except nutters had them) suddenly bellowed in a voice which reverberated round the vicinity "where are you Villa?"

All I thought was if you find them mate I'm right with you!

Horrible horrible scary walk back to town.

Rather like my trip to The Pyramids in the same convoy of coaches the day before the Germans were all killed in a petrol bombing attack ,  I am glad I went when I did but I will never go there again.

Anyone remember when we played Millwall?  I guess it was the day of the McInally goal when they kept the HOME fans in and even blockaded Witton Lane so it was impossible to walk from The Holte to the away end entrance ?

Probably not the best option to hold fans in the ground, but come on. I would love to be there.  Be a terrific atmosphere, especially if we win which I think we will. Always a bit hairy after a derby but everyone going knows that.  Part and parcel. The City is ours!!

The Scum make West Ham Millwall & Glasgow look like apprentices.

Someone should just nuke The SHA, be good for greenhouse gasses and global warming

Wear what you like Do what you like. It's only Blues don't get carried away. I think we got kept in in the Cup game and that made things worse. Every time we've been let out together there's not been that much trouble as we tend to blend in after a few hundred yards. I reckon letting them time to get together and us coming out in a hoard isn't the best idea! I'm surprised they've not closed off the road like they did witton Lane last season.

Not going to this one.   Last one I went to was I think a cup game - Blooz fans were tearing up their own seats and throwing them down on us as we walked out - horrible - another time, we were penned in the area outside the away entrance whilst bottles and coins were hurled in over the fence!    I just hope that when they come to our place, we do the same to them and keep them in for 30 mins -  because  on previous occasions, it is WE VILLA FANS that leave via Witton Lane who have been inconvenienced by being sent on an alternative route so we don't have to walk past  the away exit enabling THEM to get out nice and conveniently whilst the home support are greatly inconvenienced  !!   It was the same with Albion recently as well - us home fans inconvenienced and at Hawthorns, we also had to go on a long alternate walk -  so that when we go elsewhere, it is us, as away fans inconvenienced all the time.

It doesn't happen at Villa, as Villa Park is much easier to police. Old Bill only have to give short escorts to the coach park, or Witton Station. In extreme circumstances, they can block off Witton Lane.
