Steve Bruce

Great result and good backs to the wall performance from Toon.

That Lascalles challenge was 100% a penalty though. We didn't get that luck with a double deflection falling straight to Kane.

He is a better manager that Pochettino. Proved that today.

but Jos Luhukay and John Eustace are better managers than Bruce if thats how a manager skill is shown

Watch Newcastle get a jammy, incredibly lucky win (even luckier than ours would've been) and then the media will hail Bruce as a tactical genius who just needs to be given time.

Mods, can we ban Mantis from any future predictions please 😁

Blimey, Champions League winner. What's an adjective you can award to potato head if Rafa is poor?

It was nearly 15 years ago though so doesn't really have any bearing on today. since then he has won the italian cup twice & the europa league with chelsea which is fair enough but the mythical status around his time at newcastle is frankly rediculous. great he stayed there when they went down and managed to get a premier league team promoted from the championship at the first attempt, after that they were one of the worst teams in the prem for 2 straight years, Under Benitez they were the very definition of park the bus & hoof it. Bottom/near the bottom of all of the the possession, chances created, goals scored, passes attempted & completed charts, No wins at all until the 11th game last year... The only thing they came near the top of in anything was long balls played. People continually moan about bruce being an old, outdated dinosaur who just parks the but but benitez is actually older than bruce and did the exact same thing for 2 years that people are concerned bruce may do.

We got relegated at the same time as Newcastle, whilst we were stuck in the Championship for three seasons, Benitez took them up as champions, and got them to two mid-table finishes (10th and 13th) in the Premier league. I know who I'd prefer out of him and Bruce, and there are many ways of playing defensive football, Diego Simeone is known as a defensive coach, but no one would compare him to someone like Bruce.

PL is hard. Teams staying up with hoofity hoof have done what they set out to do.

What did Bruce and Rafa do in the division below? Bruce hoofity hoofed his way to nothingness and Rafa's Newcastle won the title and scored 85 goals.

You surely don't think Bruce is a more capable manager than Rafa?

If we’re discounting Rafa’s champions league win because of how long ago it was, we’ll have to discount a couple of Steve’s promotions in the spirit of fairness.

2 of his promotions were 12 years or more.

Bruce 1st promotion Rafa was winning his 1st La Liga

Bruce was getting promoted for the 2nd time when Rafa was contesting a Champions League final

Bruce 3rd promotion, Rafa was winning the Europa League

Bruce 4th promotion, granted Rafa was relegated after taking Newcastle for about 10 games

Benitez winning the champions league 15 years ago is about as relevant to football today as us & forest winning the european cup through isn't it. It's a nice trophy & medal to have and part of the history but it means absolutely nothing to the team of today. Most of our players weren't even born the last time we won anything

We'll see this season i guess.

They can't really use defensive football as a stick to beat bruce with though when last year only cardiff had a lower average posession & passing % stat than newcastle & the year before only stoke & west brom.

Their passing stats were horrendous too, highest amount of long balls yet worst accuracy of long balls played, same with the short passes, nearly the lowest amount attempted yet the highest amount of inaccurate passes played. Just absolute crap all round.

They have simply gone from one ultra defensive manager who relied almost entirely on hoofball counter attacks to a big man up front to another one who does pretty much the same yet one is a hero worthy of a statue being built and one is despised for doing the same thing.

Alan Shearer says Rafa Benitez deserves his own statue outside St James' Park - but on one condition

The Newcastle United legend and former England captain praised the Spaniard and said everyone at the club 'loves him'

I am happy for you, Brucie!

U are happy that one of our relegation rivals get a bonus 3 points away at a team they should not beat?

Odd.

Straight out the Brucie Playbook, what a total cretin, doomed to fail there..

I thought this was photoshopped or BBC Football News was some fake account or something. Nope, it's 100% real.

I also notice that some people in here are willing to die on the "Steve Bruce is a better manager than Rafa Benitez" hill. Well, we have until May to see I guess.
