Just because you are not convinced about a 34 re signing that doesn't mean you wnat the manager out.

I thought you would have seen Hutton's signing as another element of stability, and a safe pair of hands because of his experience, and he's surely a player that will help us avoid relegation, as you seem to think is our aim next year?

Yes, it was Bruce who gave huge wages to Terry, Snodgrass, Lansbury, Whelan, Grabban, Hogan, so I think you will find that he also carries some of the blame.

Stop being hysterical now. All he needs is another preseason.

Things are very much up in the air at the moment, We've got no idea of what squad we're going to have next season.

I can see the logic behind keeping Bruce but I think i'd like a change. A change to what though I'm not sure.

It'd be interesting to see a full list of Steve Bruce's transfer history as a manager, including all of his purchases and sales, with approximate transfer fees. I genuinely can't remember what level of funding he was given when at Sunderland and Wigan previously. I'm guessing at the unwashed he was given £40 and a packet of Wotsits.

This is an overview of all purchased players who arrived during the spell of the manager.

Transfermarkt has it, the figures are probably not 100% .

Can sort by club, or price or year..

If Bruce was to walk, I take it that a lot of people in here will be calling for a Mick McCarthy 'safe pair of hands' type manager?

I think you've tried to make a point here, but I think what you've done is proved the point of people saying keeping Bruce is the better option.

Given our financial predicament, McCarthy is probably amongst the better candidates we'll be able to attract.

Which is EXACTLY why people are saying keeping Bruce might be the better option. Because those are the kind of alternatives we can probably expect.

A change to some eye - pleasing football, maybe ?

By all accounts Bruce reduced the wage bill didn't he?

So you have half a point I guess. But I imagine he, like most managers, just works within the budget he was given.

Bruce or no Bruce, our standard of football will decrease next season. I'd bet a lot of money on it.

So someone who's never won or achieved anything of any significance, has never managed a club with a large fan base or a stadium of more than 15000 capacity and has only ever managed in the 'lower leagues'.

That's the stature and reputation we're/you're aiming for?

Well, the tried and tested promotion specialist worked out well didn't it?

And a couple of transfer windows, plus, we should not expect too much, because, well, that's just hysterical.

When people get hysterical about the wages of Terry and the like what did they expect? We were still trying to get promoted. Terry cost us maybe 2.5 million...signing a CB would have cost more. Same with Snodgrass. Those loans are not the problem. Yeah people like agbonlahor, Richards, RMC, and yes Hogan, one Bruce signing are.

Snodgrass and Terry may have contributed maybe £400,000 a month maximum. Yet we're losing apparently loads more. We still needed a team.

I don't think anything has been proved, because no-one knows whether a completely different type of manager might have done better in the 1.5 seasons that Bruce has been here.

Likewise, if Bruce was to leave, no-one knows whether a manager like Mick McCarthy would do better next season than a younger manager who doesn't have 10+ seasons of mid-table Championship finishes under his belt.

My personal preference is that we look for our own Eddie Howe, David Wagner, Sean Dyche or Slavisa Jokanovic. There are managers out there with good reputations that would jump at the chance to manage Villa, and as risky an approach that may seen to some, I believe that we'll still have a squad capable of a mid-table finish, so, to me, the risk of the unknown is outweighed by the fact that you're planning more long-term. A young manager could start a proper rebuild, as opposed to a Bruce or McCarthy type who, in my opinion, seem to acheive a points tally in line with the size of their transfer budget.

Absolutely. The point was that Bruce needs to shoulder some blame for the mess we apparently find ourselves in.

This. Long-term thinking is what's needed. Bruce is fine if our aim is just to keep us afloat. However if we want to see genuine progress, a different route is needed.

"prove" was the wrong word. Apologies.

What I meant was you are showing why people are saying keeping Bruce might be the best option. Not as in why they are right, just why they are thinking it.

Obviously nobody is going to say we should keep Bruce instead of getting (insert name of really good manager here)

But given the difficulties we're likely to face next season then isn't it a huge gamble to try and find the next Eddie Howe? What is the likelihood of that?
If we're going to be struggling with a massively reduced squad and no money to do anything with it, is keeping a very good manager at this level (which is what Bruce is, despite what some on here might say) such a bad idea?

And as crazy as it is, if our money situation is really bad, then Mick McCarthy wouldn't be a bad appointment.

I think a lot of things need to happen before we can start to see some genuine progress. Right now, it is purely about staying afloat.

Fixed for you, without the rose tinted spectacles.
