BIG BID: Aston Villa have launched a £20m bid for Abel Hernandez

It was reported at the weekend that the Championship side were planning to firm up their interestin the 26-year-old.

And, according to Sky Sports, they have made their move on the penultimate day of the transfer window.

If Villa get the deal over the line then it would be the most expensive signing in Championship history.

Hernandez hit 22 league goals last season to help Hull earn promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs.

Hull are already working to sign a number of new strikers with Manchester United's Will Keane set to join for £1m while an enquiry has been made for Bristol City's Jonathan Kodjia.

Despite signing Ross McCormack from Fulham for £12m, Villa owner Dr Tony Xia confirmed the club were hoping to sign another attacker.

He sent fans into meltdown earlier this month when he tweeted: "We're working very hard 2have a world class 9#striker."

Villa have spent big this summer in a bid to earn an instant return to the Premier League but they have picked up just five points from five games and sit 16th in the Championship table.

Let's not forget pat Murphy said we had no interest in Ross McCormack.

He said he understood we weren't interested on 8 July and then that we "revived" interest on 2 August.  That's a sizeable gap in a transfer window that simply doesn't exist now.

I'd have thought any bits journalists are getting now would be likely more accurate (although obviously not 100%) due to the time scales and amount of chat that will be getting done.
