In summary, Ross McCormack has gone out to Australia twice because it’s like a holiday over there or it shows his desire to prove himself as a committed footballer, doing well to score plenty of goals that could have just been against poor defences or coming from free kicks/penalties, all whilst dealing with mental health/alcohol issues that he may or may not have and which the club have/have not given him the requisite support for.

Sounds about right ?

McCormack to return to Villa for assessment on knee injury

Central Coast Mariners hope Aston Villa's medical staff can advance the recovery of marquee striker Ross McCormack and have him back in A-League action on New Year's Eve.

The Mariners announced on Wednesday their on-loan marksman will return to his parent club in England for a specialist assessment of his knee injury.

McCormack will be back in Gosford before Christmas.

The Scotland international has missed the past two games for the winless Mariners and has learned he will be unavailable for at least two more after consulting a surgeon on Monday.

The delay was forecast by coach Mike Mulvey, who estimated his key acquisition would be out for about a month after Friday's 2-0 loss to Western Sydney Wanderers, their fifth successive defeat.

"We expect him back just before Christmas and the best situation we can see at this stage would be having Ross eligible for selection for our New Year's Eve game against Perth Glory," Mulvey said.

The injury news was fairly grim for the out-of-form Mariners who are anchored to the foot of the table with just two points from seven games.

Mulvey confirmed they will be without winger Tommy Oar, the club's other key off-season signing, for at least another week.

Socceroos winger Oar was showing positive signs in rehabilitation for a knee problem, having run freely at training this week.

He will miss a fourth-straight game when the Mariners travel to Wellington Phoenix on Saturday but is a good chance of returning for their derby match against Newcastle Jets.

Jonathan Aspropotamitis will again play in the youth league this weekend, with Mulvey confident the young central defender isn't far off an A-League return after nine months recovering from an ACL rupture.

Corey Gameiro (calf) is inching closer to a Mariners debut with Mulvey predicting the forward will return to full training over the Christmas period.

The brightest update was around rookie attacker Jordan Murray, who injured his ankle against Perth Glory last month but is available to face the Phoenix.

Genuinely think he'd be great the way we play now.

Agreed, he would be very good in Grealish's current role.

Obviously we haven't seen him properly since his first season with us but we could do a lot worse than bringing him back in January and at least have him training under Smith, O'Kelly and Terry to see if there's anything there. The same goes for Tshibola and De Laet. Elphick and Steer will likely be surplus to requirements given the intent to sign replacements in the transfer window.

I agree it's always worth it to find out while we can't get rid fully, maybe he can make his last bit of time at villa worth it somehow. Sure Smith can work some magic with the guy, if Grealish is out have him work as midfielder see if he can convert into how grealish plays.

He has potential. I think under bruce that potential got wasted, look at our players who are playing well under Smith and how they were under bruce..
